Rumor has it that subject to contracts been exchanged, the Woodhouse Mill Pond on Leeds Road, often known as the ICI/Zenika/Syngenta pond is been renovated and is due to open again next year. How do I know this rumor is true, well I am the one hoping to take it on.
Lot of work to be done first to make it safe and clean before a full restock in November. Facilities and club membership should be in Operation For April 2014. More details will follow.
Been an avid follower of this site for a while, so took the plunge and signed up.

Good luck it will be good to have the place open again, I've missed it. BOF You may be able to help me with a few problems I am having with the water controls, if you have time call me on (01484) 305313 even if you don't know the answers you may know someone who does. I have to say I haven't fished it for many a year, but when it was electric netted recently, there are very few small fish left, looks like the 26inch pike has taken care of them, there are still some 20lb plus carp in there and very healthy indeed, I am just waiting for the water quality results to be returned then with the EA advice we intend to add 2000 fish to the upper lake, by the time we have the lower lake refilled there should be the room for plenty of various size fish and species. If your near by this Saturday drop in we have a work party clearing the paths to allow for the mini digger to get in and the tree shreader, it would be nice to meet someone who had recent experience of the waters. Its here :- binged.it/1fryPbxIts below the level of the nearby Leeds Road Huddersfield, just next to the Huddersfield Broad Canal, as it goes under Leeds Road itself. Folk that have fished the place that are still members of the site are Spudgun, Snowman, and of course myself, to name but a few. I'm sure there will be more though, a lot more. BOF

Thanks for the phone call, it helped allot, if anyone else has info about the lake I'd love to chat to you. We will be opening up applications for membership soon, but I expect to be overwhelmed, so we will draw at random the correct number required by the insurance (125 Max) with the recommended split between, children, males, females, OAPs and Disabled applicants.
Not sure what the forum rules are on posting e-mail addresses so if there's a blank space here they will have edited the post if no blank space request an application form from chrisw@learn2fish.ltd.uk
Thanks for everyone's help so far.

Just read through the rules with a tinge of dissapointment. Mainly because the Carp in there have been largely freewheeling, (size wise), for years, owing to the lack of a bit better diet. Yet I see a raft of bait restrictions ie no floating baits, no bread, and also Trout pellets are banned, why? Other waters I have fished down the years have responded very well to the introduction of pellets, with the fish healing much faster after the usual post spawning abrasions, cuts, s es etc, and of course its not just the big fish like Carp, the rest of the fish also get to have a better diet too. Then I see the place is only open to fish till 6 pm! That to me means no evening sessions at any time of year, (ok that one is a bit selfish as it is my main fishing time, as most of the day anglers are heading home for tea), surely that one could be looked at and extended to say 10 pm at the hight of Summer, and maybe 8pm in the rest of the year? Good luck with the venture anyway. BOF

Oh yeh iv just looked on the website....... I can see that this is looking more like a little project rather than an actual day ticket fishing pond. I can see the idea behind it in that due to that fact it will probably receive funding etc but at the end of the day i would think day tickets would make up a large amount of income or would do if only...... 'Day tickets on the gate at 9am' ? Strange to say the least and even in the depths of winter Il have been fishing over an hour by then and in the summer will have been fishing about 5hours by then!! That gives you 9-6 which is 9hours for £6, compare this to the other hundreds of day ticket waters around and compare hours on the bank to price and its actually pretty poor value! It would also be interesting to see what actual stock is left in there and what has 'walked' i hear its been electrofished? Would anyone like to shed any light on this? Because all iv heard is that most of the decent stuff has 'disappeared' but there's nothing like hearing the facts from the horses mouth.

The good news is the big stuff are all still there, we did have 1 hours fishing last saturday and a chap called Paul pulled a nice carp out, I have put his picture up on www.learn2fish.ltd on the woodhouse mills page. Theres not too much small stuff left in there at the moment but once the oxygen level rise we have a large restock ready to take place. The day tickets are on sale 9am till 6pm for the initial winter period and will be available from Chris Roberts and Calder Angling. You are absolutely correct about getting the grants, as we are putting in a number of features, including Toilets, Classroom and offices, with full wheelchair access to 20 of the 40 planned pegs. The long term plan is to get this back to a top fishing location again, and a stock fish breeding facility, plus the added wildlife and bird life preserve and of course the "Dipping pond". Its not going to happen over night, that is for certain, but we are working closely with the NRA, EA and Angling Trust to ensure we get this off the ground in the best way possible. We have cleared about 3 tons of weed from the lake so far and have unfortunately about 6 tons more to move. You can download application forms for membership March 2014 -2015 on the website www.learn2fish.ltd.uk now, selection for membership will take place in late December, hopefully using the Angling Trust to assist in the demographic distribution, those who are unlucky will be drawn at random and given a place on the waiting list. Once you have membership the lake will be fish-able dawn to dusk. Without apportioning any blame the history of events at this site have made it, lets say more restrictive, with our contractual agreement with The landowners. One mistake and the area will become a car park, lost forever. There is a number of people attending Tuesday this week to do a trial fish of the lake, if its good or bad news I will post here, but as all are members here I suspect they will also post. Shy

Not wishing to question anything as it is very unlikely i will ever fish it., but just interested in your comment
"but once the oxygen level rise we have a large restock ready to take place"
why is the DO level low? and what caused it?
we have just had a very harrowing event involving an oxygen crash and would not wish it on anyone

Its a combination of issues causing the low oxygen levels, Lack of flow as entry and exit points where blocked, huge quantity of weeds and a basic lack of surface oxygenation due to the sheltered location and overgrown trees, lilies and shrubs.
The water flow has been increased by just unblocking the inlets and out lets, some weeds are gone, a lot more to go yet, the large lilly pads are due to be pruned to a manageable quantity, and with the trees and shrubs cleared from the waters edge. The test results are a big improvement in the last month, but oxygen levels are still at the lower end of the acceptable range.
I do have an aerator option once we get mains power to the site.
The low oxygen levels may also explain why there are plenty of unhatched eggs attached to the plants, therefore explaining the shortage of fry.

Just an update as promised on the Trial fishing which took place today, there were 3 carp caught all reasonable in size about 10lb I say, those who caught them think 12lb. What is not in dispute and pleased me personally was the quantity of small fish caught today mainly roach and perch. The condition of those fish caught were well Perfect, I know one of this sites administrators asked many questions of those fishing and I think if put on the spot he would agree that the sites potential excels early expectations.

Called in to see Steve and was amazed with the place. To me it hasnt been that long surely since the place shut down, but it apparently has been, 'cause the place obviously has been well overgrown. Steve and his pals have done a huge amount of work already, all back breaking stuff, as the place is not accessable by machinery yet. In the meantime they have had to hack, dig, and slash their way through to the ponds again, (even the path had been overgrown), open up the inlet and unblock the outlets, remove TONNES of weed, (but they know there is is still a load more to cut back), cut down lots of bankside shrubs and bushes, that had grown up between the stonework, make safe number of overgrowing trees that were in danger of toppling, trim back others that were shading parts of the ponds, build a wall like "core" across the larger pond, which is to form the retaining wall / pathway round the proposed dipping pond, (part of the educational side of the project), and splits the larger (drained) pond into two. By the time Steve, (hereafter known as Superman or the human dynamo), had shown me the work done so far in such a relatively short time, I was having a right boggle. But it was nothing to the outline of the rest of the works still to be started, (all to be done in a sustainable and Eco-friendly way of course), and I was thinking "thats several years work just to raise the funds to get to stage 2", let alone actually doing the rebuilding of the large pond, plus an island, plus a repaired outfall, a classroom for the kids, (which is to be powered from solar panels, all Eco friendly and low carbon y'know), and I am sure I have missed out several other parts and important items. All this to prevent a couple of ponds and a bit of wood that somebody really cared about, from becoming another concrete covered car park. Thanks Steve! BOF PS Photos will be forthcoming as soon as I can get down there again.

Thanks for all the kind words BOF (Cheque is in the post, LOL) and a very big thank you to all those who follow this site, so much so that I have been contacted by a member who is not only wishing to remain anonymous but has donated a fully kitted out 19ft Caravan for our workers to use, to get a sit down and warm drink. I have to say I was a little upset to see so many trees are marked up ready to be felled, due to damage, dangerous state, disease etc A few of these are really old and large (with TPOs dating back over 20 years), so upset was I to see them go, that I think I will be trying to get a tree sculpture made out of at least a couple of them, there goes the kids inheritance. The work is still progressing and will be for a long time to come, fortunately the majority of the red tape has been completed now (phewww), If everything goes to plan day tickets will be on sale from the 8th of November, £6 for adults, OAPs and Juniors just £4, plus the Lucky Lambert competition, see www.learn2fish.ltd.uk more more info on Lambert. The temporary Toilets and wash room are now on site. I know there are people been put off from applying for membership as they are aware that we are already over prescribed, however I strongly recommend you still apply as we will be dividing membership up proportionally to include Juniors, employed, unemployed, Disabled and OAPs, those initially unsuccessful will be drawn a number on the waiting list. You can down load an application form from the website or e-mail chrisw@learn2fish.ltd.uk. Many genuine heart felt thanks for everyone's help and advice here on this site, its been vital in getting the lakes to the standard they are today. Shy

Just an update on the Woodhouse Mills Pond Leeds Road. Day tickets can not be sold this weekend due to our contractual issues however, we can offer a free days fishing for anyone who is interested and holds a current Rod Licence. There are only 18 pegs available so I suggest you contact me by e-mail first, I will then allocate pegs and post here when all are booked. PS If you catch Lucky Lambert on Sunday I will not be paying out the Tenner!! If anyone has a metal detector I could borrow on Sunday or anytime this week, it would be appreciated as I have to check the lower pond for any world war 2 munitions, its a long story. Shytalknight, I cannot stress this enough. If you have any suspicions that the lower pond contains any unexploded munitions then contact the police with any suspicions you have then they can get in touch with trained military Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel to remove it safely. Trying to detect and interfere in any way with any explosive device that may have been in there slowly degrading and becoming more and more unstable since maybe world war 2, the best part of 70 years is a sure fire way to get yourself a Darwin award. Mate I'm an ex Royal Engineer with years of experience of making things go bang so please believe me when I say that the DIY option is a VERY bad idea.
