Thought i would create a designated thread for people to discuss all things to do with Bridlington piers now that the winter season is nearly upon us. A few people are reportedly catching. Anyone else doing much yet? Dan

Plently of Dabs getting caught on North Wall along with loads of Crabs, bit of weed about though, we need a few frosts and that will keep the Crab activity down, when this happens I reckon alot of Cod will get caught this season

Don't think i will bother with the open ryan. No point. But i may give the South wall a go over the coming weeks, for a change of scenery. I usually take Squid, Lugworm and Mackerel for bait. Occasionaly might get some Ragworm. Have caught most species of North wall using those baits. Codling, Whiting, Coleys, Dabs, Flounder, Brill and crabs (but only in early autumn). Now the light is decreasing, the weed will become less abundant. There has been absolutley tons of it on the North Beach at Brid. So it's definitley dying back and getting washed up. Again, a good brisk northerly for a week or two, will colour the water up right and sort the weed out and the cod and whiting will follow. But form e, i think it's still too warm. I'm used to freezing my nads off in sub zero temperatures for my whiting ;D ;D .... 24 layers later and you still cant feel your legs ;D

Well I have give it ago (the open) on 2 seperate occasions and really enjoyed it, had the 12th biggest Cod last year ( I think) and had a couple of good Whiting. My uncle caught a whiting of 3lb 5oz at Holmpton 4 years ago

Well.... went on the North wall. High water was at 5:17pm so i went to the tackle shop at 1pm, got some mackerel fillets and squid, had a natter with the guy behind the counter for half an hour, and was down and set up for 2pm. Had a really good afternoon and evening, catching mainly whiting all on mackerel, with a couple of big bites on squid heads that came to nothing. Probably had 25-30 whiting, ranging from 4 or 5ozs up to about 1lb 8oz and i had a couple of flatties too. A lot of the whiting are on the lean side though. But nontheless enjoyed the session, despite the rain as it dropped dark. May go again this weekend.
Also a 3lb codling came off the North wall today and a Thornback ray was caught yesterday.

well done dan, is the north north wall the harbour area ? never tried sea fishing before but fancy giving it a go. can you get far enough out with carp rods and 3 or 4 ounces of lead as i dont fancy investing in a sea rod and mutiplyer set up if im not going to go much.
cheers james

I finf it easier to chuck with a carp rod as beachcasters are quite heavy and cumbersome. The whiting will be out about 30-40 yyds plus I reckon, Cod, about 80 plus???

The North wall is the one where the speedboats and Yorkshire Belle go from in the 'tourist season' and is only open from october 1st (i think) to march 31st (i think) for fishing each year. The south wall is the one with the Fish Quay on it.
I fish two carp rods mate, on 2.75 t/c and one 2.5 t/c. I use 20lb line straight through to the rig and 4oz leads on both and usually fish at about 50-75yds on the 2.75 and although it will get up to 100yds on a good cast, i don't push it too far. With the 2.5 t/c i fish much closer in, usually under 30yds, as you don't need to cast far to catch on here (i had a couple of my bigger fish on this short line tonight). However, you've got an air of falosy about needing a multiplier reel, you can fish with a good baitrunner/big pit carp reel coupled with a beach rod, with no trouble at all, and a beach rod can be obtained for <£20. Don't try chucking a 4oz lead with any mainline under 20lbs though, if you do, you'll snap off, or you'd have to use a much stronger shock leader.
If you need any help mate PM me, and we could organise a meetup.

Did i not say in my report .... ... musn't have done. I was using a 2 hooked flapper rig (I think), 4oz lead. Not sure what sizes hooks i was using, but i know they weren't overly big. If anyone is free tomorrow, i may go down, depending on the weather. If so i will tell everyone i'm going down and we could have a meet up. If not tomorrow, we could do saturday. I'm organising a meet with landyboy soon so maybe we could have a little YF social ;D ;D

Well, the weather is to turn against us today, rain and wind is forecast from 3pm onwards, so i think i shall be giving it a miss. Plus ive got a massive sore on my thumb, which bloody kills. Anyway, the forecast for tomorrow is much better, no rain and light winds, and high tides and in the morning and evening, so i am thinking of doing an early start, all dayer until just after high tide in the evening. Hopefully there will be a couple of meters of water to fish in at low tide, so there will still be chance for a fish or two, until the tide turns. I'll let you all know tonight if i'm going, cause i'll decide then. Maybe we (those who've posted on here) could meet up tomorrow, if anyones up for it, with it being a saturday. Dan

Well, it's a bit late but here is yesterday's (Saturday) report. I didn't have the time or energy to put it up last night, cause i was up at 6:30 and fished until 8pm, got watching Piers Morgans interview with Ronnie Corbett, anf then match of the day ;D So anyway, i pitched up and was fishing for around 8am, the tide had just begun to fall. I had with me just squid and mackerel again and started off on what was the most productive the other day, mackerel. Unbelievably i chopped up 8 fillets, filleted a mackerel i was given to gain another two, and had another couples worth in with my squid, so i had a dozen chopped up fillets worth to go at! ........ but by christ did i go through it! Again, i was fishing two rods. I only managed to get loads bites throughout the first couple of hours of the tides eb and i was going through my mackerel like nobodies business! This produced 5 small whiting and a couple of flatties. But all of a sudden at around half 10-11am, the sport just dried up. I inteneded to fish right through the low tide, and stuck with it. Once the bited had dried up, i stopped fishing two rods and just kept one out as there was no point in using bait for two when the fish were clearly not there. To cut a long story short, i had hardly a knock for about 3 hours until the tide was well on the turn at around 2:30pm where knocks started to come again. The problem was though, i simply could not connect with them. In the last half an hour of daylight, i managed 4 or 5 flatties, on of which, a plaice was a beauty actually, getting on for 1lb. Then just as night fell, a couple of guys left and gave me some ragworms and lugworms. It was like a key in a lock! I put rag or lug and mackerel or squid cocktails on each rod straight away.... and booomf.... the whiting appeared ;D After this little discovery, between about 5pm and 7:30pm i had about 10 whiting between 10ozs-1lb and a further half a dozen flatties, including another half decent one possibly also over 10ozs. By 7:30, though i was running out of worms, mackerel and i was cold and hungry, so i gave it until 8pm and had a couple more big bites, but missed them and the lure of a warm house and a pizza became too great and i called it a day. Again, not a bad do, but sport was less constant. Dan
