Hi all. Was wondering if anyone's fished a match on Straight Mile near Brampton recently - I need good advice on bait and tactics. I've got a match on there next month, but have never fished it and won't get to visit at all beforehand as I now live down south. From what I've read and heard, it sounds like floating pole or pollyball to the island, or margin tactics with worm/meat/corn/meat? Can anyone reccomend the top one or two safe bets, as I don't want to take every bait under the sun and then mess about experimenting for the entire match.

you wont have to struggle messing about experimenting with different baits....ive never fished it but luncheon meat, corn, maggot and caster are the only baits allowed

Hi there.
All i would fish is chop worm and caster, it's 16 meter to island in most pegs though. but fish this down the track, and you can bring em up in the water and build section winning weight
Feed both margins with meat and corn, as some proper lumps are under your feet. if you draw the peg near the bridge this a absolute flyer, turn your box to the left and fish to the side of it with meat its full of carp, chub and barbel.
GOOD LUCK Duz.

Cheers Duz. Sounds like decent advice . My mate fished it this weekend and said the biggest problem was getting through the smaller roach - even mega chunks of meat were being whittled down to nothing in under a minute if a carp or larger roach hadn't nabbed it first. I presume worm singles out the bigger fish. Any preference between corn & meat or would you take & feed both? Thanks again.

ok mate.
If you can't reach the island, start at 11 meter on the deck with worm and caster, set a shallow rig over this line and drip feed caster, this should bring the fish up. keep the casters going in and the better roach and chub should come.
Put a large pot of chopped meat, and corn in both margins and a few casters, keep dropping on these lines but if theres nothing there don't waste time, just keep trickling the feed in and watch for the signs of them feeding.
Duz.

If anyone's reading this thread in the hope of match advice about Straight Mile, like I was after, I thought I'd let you know how I got on. I've got to say I had a dissapointing match and I didn't frame, but it was always going to be tricky on a first visit. It wasn't Duz's advice that was wrong either - it was just an extremely hot and windy day which made it tricky for everyone. 50+lb won - floating pole and meat - but he was in a rare sheltered spot and could get across the far bank with no problems. The heat meant fish wanted the bait up in the water, but the strong wind meant any decent length of pole was impossible to handle. I ended up fishing the margins either side with punched meat and feeding caster. I also had corn and worm, but the fish - including roach - wanted the meat. I fed really heavily and it seemed impossible to overfeed, with a handful of caster and chopped meat every put-in - so I'd take plenty (4+ pints of each) if you can afford it. The roach are a decent size, at around 4-6oz, but you need the carp to frame and I struggled to get through the roach. Even big cubes of meat were getting battered around, so I'd fish for what you can get and hope to net a few carp, rather than trying to single out carp alone. Of course you may be best to follow Duz's advice above if the weather conditions are calmer when you visit. I ended up with 32lb of fish - mostly roach, so very entertaining! Tight lines.

Thats how it goes, you never know what the elements will throw at you.
Still 32lb was'nt a bad weight.
