Why the need to modify such a good product you may ask?
Well it all started in May this year when I suffered my first stroke and was advised to get plenty of fresh air and take gentile exercise so I took up fishing again after and absence of some 17 years. I found it very difficult to sit on a seat box due to the lack of feeling and mobility in my right side, so having seen the Korum Accessory chair in the angling press I thought this would be a good buy and also I had a lot of the fixtures that fit square legs I could use them without having to spend more of my money. The chair worked very well all throughout the summer I even got quite good using a pole from it.
Then along came stroke number 2 after a spell in hospital again I was again advised to get plenty of fresh air and exercise as much as I could, so back to fishing, the chair still worked well ,but it became increasingly difficult to get in and out of it this became very evident in October while fishing at Thorpe Hall in East Yorkshire when I hooked a 16lb common carp on my pole and I needed to stand up to tame the beast I ended up in the lake (but I landed the carp).
I was advised that as the chair was so low I had to rock forwards to get the momentum to stand up, but there lay the problem I rocked so far forward that I fell forward in to the lake. (Do Shackeltons do a high seat for the angler?) No, but hang on do Korum do longer legs for their chair? NO. After contacting several tackle dealers and manufactures I came across the name Penrose in the Disabled Angling forum of YFN thanks “Finny”. Looking through their web site it only appeared they did round seat box legs, but then found their platform legs were square so contacted their customer care line and enquired as to the dimensions of these legs 19.5mm square by an amazing coincidence the same as the legs on the Korum chair or as near as makes no difference.
Then I got the news from the doc that what had recovered after the stroke was all that would recover so what that means is I have reduced mobility in my right side ( I have to use a walking Stick) weak right hand and arm and problems with my speech. Not to bad as it goes there are worse off than me (dint feel it at the time of being told all this), but hey ho life goes on as long as I have my fishing I will be ok. Back to the chair problem or its solution; I ordered 4 x 26” platform legs, 1 x pupss pole rest, 1 x Adjustable footplate from Penrose if it dint work could get money back on EBay. When they arrived I immediately set about modifying my chair everything just fitted together so smooth it could not last sure enough footplate was for round legs! Not to worry rang Penrose yes we do an adapter piece for the footplate so it fits square legs we will make you a set and post it out it may be 3 days before you receive it we are busy at the moment, so just waiting for them and then it is a winner. I set it all up in the back garden and even with my pole at full length I was able to hold it and the pupss rest took 90% of the weight so no strain on hands and arms. Getting in and out of the chair is a breeze now so all in all 11 out of 10 to Penrose.
In closing during my conversation with the people at Penrose they stated that if any disabled angler has a problem like the one with my chair give them a ring and they will try to resolve them.
Cheers Tony
