I've been invited to fish the Great Ouse at Great Barford, Bedfordshire on opening day. Anyone know anything about the stretch??

Where abouts have you fished it BOF. My impression of this river was that there are a load of barbel and chub, but reading the EA website it talks of silvers and predators. Do you know any more??

You are joking aren't you? Just in case you are not, this river is Chub city and Barbel heaven down from Stoney Stratford, via Milton Keynes, Adams Mill, and on towards Newport Pagnell. However I have heard that lower down the river it deepens, widens, and slows much more. Becoming close to a canal like drain. This is when shoals of Bream come much more into the mix, hence also the big Pike. However I must admit to only fishing the area round MK, so I can't tell you anything about the lower river. Good luck. BOF

The EA description sounds about right for the Cambridgeshire length of the Great Ouse, which is much further downstream & has a totally different character to the area you are fishing. Soz, don't know your bit well enough to help.

Guys, The bloke giving out the invite has been talking about bream and tench Now I don't mind catching any fish, but if I'm going a long way, onto a river I thought was stuffed with barbel and chub to catch tench and bream, at least I want to know!! If you know what I mean. It would be like going to the Dorset Stour to catch, well, something other than chub and barbel Might give it a miss and go back to the Don ;D

If you have sky barts, watch out for Mainstream on 250-252, Matt Hayes travels the lenght of the Great Ouse, and should give you a good idea of what the River is like in the area you are going to fish. A quick look on google earth has confirmed it is wide and navigable at Great Barford.
