Havent been since Starmer took it over, but it used to be a first class spot when Tim Paisley ran the trips with CarpWorld. I lost a load of photos of when we went with Tim, Clive Detrich, Crowy, Rob Hughes, John Liley, et al. a while back when my old computer died. But our pictures were on the back of Carp World for a while, advertising the spot. So if you have any back issues you may see our ugly mugs gawping back at you. Anyway back to your question, if you want more info on individual areas it may be better to ask the folk at Starmer (much more up to date), but I can tell you what we learned, if you want. BOF

I wouldnt set up permanently on the dam wall unless you can REALLY cast ! John Lilley used to put his marker out at around 130+ yds. He always picked almost the extreme left hand end swim, and cast up the length of the deer park, which was Raphaels home, and so out of bounds. In effect he was fishing the margins of the land on the left of the lake, leaving only a small bay to his left for anyone to set up in. The fish were quite line shy in those days, and you could quickly push the fish out to silly distances with loads of lines in the water. Try fishing as close in as you feel comfortable with at first, IF you have the bank to yourselves. Otherwise you will have to fish at the same distance as everyone else. BOF

A friend has been and he reckons the dam wall end is pretty deep and the bottom is very silty. He says you need to have a good cast about to find any gravel patches or usechod style rigs to keep your bait above the silt

thanks bof & humhx. we have to fish the dam first night due to access and arriving late, but its only a w/end .were back at 8 pm on mon . the long chuck is ok , for me , will have to cast for jnr , we are getting a boat for sunday, so will have a prod around then, i dont know if the l/ side is still out of bounds, hope so as we will stand a chance then, using chods is ok as that will help the casting, one rule he told us about,is no baiting from the boat past 100mtrs. so its going to be a spod or stick job any how, at least i am starting to feel we have 1/2 a plan. we are going to walk the rods out and mark up ,so at least we can fish and bait on sat.and then attempt to do it proper on sun/mon. cheers for the help . graham

Try to fish the right hand bank then, Jerseyman, a couple of hundred metres at least from the dam wall end. On the photo above you will see a small bulge above a cream coloured field, any of the swims before there should be ok. But do not go right into the corner. The fish seem to patrol along the banks in shoals, and short cut across such angles. You may then find you only pick up such small numbers of resident fish, if you do get yourself tucked away in such places, (same for the bay at the left hand end of the dam wall). Good luck. BOF

thanks bof & humx. we arrived sat 11pm ,after an hr detour courtesy of tom tom, pictures in the lodge are impressive to say the least. we fished pegs 32/33/34 ,as told, a severe long way to cast, no fish apart from jnrs 4-10 bream(pb) kept awake by somebody dropping what sounded like hippos' from a 1000ft up!!! early sun am ,moved to pegs 7/8/9 on east bank. where bof told me to go. there about 4hrs before jnr managed another pb and first with this 10- 8 gray sturgeon previuos blokes in this area had 2 x 50+ and other "small "carp 40-30 etc, they had kindly left there markers in, i could see them with the help of binoculars, christ knows how they were getting that far out?we fished about 90/110 yds . during the afternoon, the baliff told us that the forecast was for 90/110kph winds .great then it swung from sw to nw .right in our faces. during sun night we experienced some pretty unpleasant weather, unfortunatley, tom tom decided to hook first a 28lb cat, then 3hrs later a sturgeon , so no sleep again, the kid ,poor sod, had to retire, as he was that excited sat , he didnt sleep ,and he was worried he wouldnt hear his alarms!!!!, come daybreak mon, the wind was still howling, but had eased a tadge, and we were getting periods of calm, followed by 10/15 min squalls. bright spark here, decided to get some more bait out,so after bailing the boat out, life jkt on. 100yds out in the lake, next min , its a replay of the perfect storm, no big waves ,just horizontal rain, or was it bits of the lake,? any way it worked as an hr later at last a carp 24-12. yippee, 2nd biggest i've had far to late ,we discovered that by going 15/20 yds past the baited spots ,we would avoid the bream, and stand a chance of carp. i managed 2 more including this one of 23-8 and one about 18/19. hard luck on jnr though, he lost 3 good fish, when they ran round the back of the conduit marker poles. all in all an experience, learnt masses in a very short time, expensive without a doubt .but you have a realistic chance of a v/big fish and lots as well, bait wise would suggest that 20mm baits are just about ok, any smaller and its bream s**tty you do need to understand though, that it may not happen!!. highlight for me was the kids sturgeon .cracking s . and netting a 70+ cat for a bloke on the dam cos his missus was s*** scared of it when it surfaced, i was only walking past going to the bogs as well. still, beats working.

Great stuff Jerseyman and good luck if you go again. It is possible those distant markers were used by folk taking their baited rigs out in the boat, and dropping them over after they had put the feed in. We found it better to fish just a little further out, and slightly to one side of the baited patch, so the line didn't go across it, and spook any Carp off feeding. Something I now do on all waters where a large quantity of freebies are used, and the fish are well fished for. BOF

we were told by ian starmer that you couldnt boat bait or hook baits beyond 100 yds, obviously one rule for some, then!!. anyone going though would be advised to nail the do's and dont's down as they seemed to differ when you asked different people\!!

Doesn't time fly, 5 yrs on and back again. Took big brother this time, still raining!! Very quiet, bream started spawning sunday, which attarcted vast majority of the fish to feed on the spawn, Bro had a few bream ,plenty of skimmers, 2 grassies and a common just short of 20. i managed to beat jnr's efforts of yester year and land a sturgeon of 44lb. but only a couple of carp to 35, s of the sturgeon was in keeping with tradtion, fantastic. The place itself has been cleaned up, swims redone, complex redecorated etc, new manager and baliff as well. also instead of pushing your kit on a barrow, they now have a mini tractor and trailer to do the job. Is it worth the money? for a full week, don't know, if you caught ,definately yes, but if you can only get a few days , its a worth a visit
