Several of us have posted the odd “where can I go for a holiday that has some decent fishing, yet won’t repel my family ? ” type of message.
Well at a risk of it looking like an advert for the place, I think I have found just such a spot, namely Lonsdale Park in Cumbria.
I went up to the area with a pal, who had business in the area, and I thought I could kill two birds with one stone, by having a good nosey around before “Her Indoors” and I actually booked.
Ok maybe I did the place no favours by visiting it at this time. What with the leaves falling, and some terrific winds trying to lift yours truly off his feet, but even so, it looks a right cracking spot.
A lot of effort has gone into developing this place and it really shows.
Its not as commercialized as some of the bigger names in the fishing + accommodation stakes. But it really deserves to be better known.
There are several lakes on the site, see here:-
However I only had time to look round two of them, Lonsdale and Willows. Which I found absolutely “spot on”, with some cracking Tench, Perch, Catfish, and big Carp to target, almost out of the windows of some of the accommodation.
Here are a few trophy shots from folk who stayed previously, just to give you the general idea. Starting with that "Cat":-

And just to show its not all Specimen fishing:-
Back to the accommodation, this was in either, caravans, cottages, or lodges. Which looked all very comfortable, tidy, and seemingly no more that a few years old. Thats unlike some of the rather “tired” places I have stayed in, down in the West Country, or on the Warwickshire Avon. In fact although I am not sure but some of Lonsdales accommodation looked absolutely brand new.
There are some useful facilities on site, like a café, a games room, a playground for the kids, also a basic provisions and tackle shop.
Handy, if you can’t bear to tear yourself away from the place long enough to buy those odd bits you just have to have.
In addition to the tackle shop, there are several nice ideas, put into practice to help the visiting angler.
Such as motorized “Fishmobility” buggies for hire, (to get the less mobile of the visitors around the site).
There being surfaced paths around, or to, most of the lakes. But note, not all the pegs are accessible to wheelchair anglers. So you will need to check before booking if your private swim is suitable for your needs, or you may find yourself fishing further away from your accommodation, in a swim that is more suited.
In addition to the buggies there are also 4 wheel pneumatic platform pull trolleys available for hire, as an aid to the more encumbered of us to drag the excessive amounts of gear to whatever swim we pick.
Anyway I am not going to bang on about the place any more, for the time being, you can have a look at their website here:-

If you do contact them please mention Yorkshire Fishing website when doing so.
