Press manor Fishery, Wingerworth, Derbyshire.
We heard about this fishery through a friend who fly fishes, and they told us that
they also had a Course lake. Got given the Tel No of the owner Bernie 07976 306073, gave him a call, he said come and take a look.
So I took the boys over for a pre-amble and to try and get info regarding catching big-uns.
The Trout lake is dead easy to find, however the course lake is a tad more difficult to find! But while we was at the trout lake we took a walk round. It looks & feels welcoming, everyone was friendly and said "hello" in nice surroundings.
Basically they have 3 stream fed lakes/reservoirs, each one lower than the other. In really nice surroundings right on the edge of the Peak District National Park 10 mins from Chesterfield. Just of the A632 (the Matlock Rd) via the A61.
We also took a look at the Carp lake (£8 a Day, normal rules apply, unhooking mats must be used, Barbless hooks, 2 Rods, No Nuts, night tickets available £13) while we was here and a chap caught a 12lb Mirror carp while we took a look, the Carp lake has just had some better access work completed so it did not look at it's best, but it will not take to long for the bankside cover to regrow. We spotted countless Carp swanning a round on the surface watching us, watching them!
But we got back to the car and ventured to find the course lake. they do have a map on the gate of the main entrance, I studied this, and spoke to the Bailiff who told me take the next right and just follow the signs!
5 Mins later we pull into the car park over looking the course lake, and it looks really inviting. It is a mature lake about 2-3 acres in size with around 30 pegs with good access. I took a rest on the bankside watching what was happening while the kids took a stroll round doing the "caught anything mister act" It seems that everyone had caught fish.
While almost dozing I met the owner Bernie who is really freindly, while his dog slavered over the kids, £4 a day for adults £3 for under 16's & after 4.30pm £2.50 for all. No keepnets, no nut baits, & don't go mad with groundbait! The setup which will catch fish was "1 rod length out, size 18 about 2" of the bottom with Pellets, Sweetcorn, or a piece of meat will see you catching all day"
We stayed around for about another hour watching Skimmers and Roach being caught by most, just as we was about to leave we heard a shout, and a lad down the far end had just landed a 8lb Common Carp on a floating dog biscuit.
I thought we will return!
We planed to fish the course lake on Sunday 2nd July, the evening before everything was checked into the car, and rechecked twice by the kids, We had to restock the Cool box with food as they had decided to test what was in the box, just in-case, not sure in-case of what?
Of early next morning and arrived at the lake just after 7.30am 5 or 6 already fishing so we decided on the right hand side halfway along, each peg has a concrete base making it easier for the kids to set up.
I set-up a waggler, plumbed and found a ledge 14 foot out about 7 foot deep, and threw in some Sweetcorn, put a nice looking piece on the hook and waited, Well the wife caught first, a nice roach around 1lb, then both kids proceeded to catch, Roach & skimmers of a nice size, with the odd Gudgeon, about 5" long!
Then finally it was my turn, whatever had taken my bait was not moving off the bottom, it obviously liked swimming a round, but it did not want to come off the bottom, finally got it in the net, a nice Barbel probably 1 - 1 1/2lb but size is not everything, it was in really good condition, all the fish we caught on the day were pristine, and fighting fit.
We caught fish most of the day, with a lull around early afternoon, but the evening came into it own, the fish started to get larger, skimmers became Bream, and the Roach became big buggers, almost pushing 2lb I would guess.
Then one of the kids (son of mcsheffield 2 - Stephen) shouted I've caught the bottom, but it keeps moving! he finally landed his first Barbel! and was shattered.
Others on the lake had caught a few large Carp on floating dog biscuits, but they Totally ignored mine when I had a try, I must work out what I was doing wrong but that will be our next visit I think. We caught fish on Sweetcorn, luncheon meat, bread, pellets, & maggots, Adam even caught a small Common Carp on Pork Pie!
We finally had to leave when there was an enormous thunder clap above our heads, and it looked like it was going to rain a bit! We just made it back to the car in time, when the heavens opened big time.
We all really enjoyed our visit to this fishery, and would recommend it to anyone, £14 well spent in my book for 2 adults & 2 Kids, fantastic value for money. We are now planning our next visit!
I have since found a website for the fishery
