Nipped across to Foulridge reservoir with a mate for the afternoon yesterday.Sport fairly slow in Foulridge terms but we managed a ton of slabs between us and a load of bits plus a single Tench.Groundbait feeder and dead maggots worked for me.

Yes the Bream have been doing well for some folk lately. But not by any means in every swim. Its a large expanse of water and the Slabs seem to have been following the wind, bear that in mind if you go folks. BOF

Sound advice from Bof. I had a go last weekend and found the place almost empty of water with a match on the near side. The wind was blowing onto the far end so I set up in the mud flats and fished into what was only about a couple of feet of water. It took over an hour for a bite but I eventually got the swim going and was catching on most casts with skimmers to about 2lb. After about 4-5 hours without a sniff from anything better the match finished and the bailiff recommended I tried the deeper water at the other end. I moved across and spent a couple of hours or so fishing into the deeper water with the wind on my back without a bite. Moral of the story - keep the wind in your face! By the way, I think the match was won with about 40lb although catches seemed spread out and the bailiff said fishing had been really poor recently.

Thats not a bad result given the conditions. No, I'll say its a good result. I suspect the lesser results, (other than the top two or three) werent even close to half that. Its been a long dry spell over there, and a lot of water has been taken out to top up the canal. So much so my local contact hasnt bothered with the place since August, and he just lives at the top of the hill, almost overlooking it. Mind you, he too has caught "Carp Poolitus", and has spent far too much time, in my opinion, sitting by the side of a murky pool waving a pole around. BOF

Hmm probably why they are deserting the place, and are fishing the local carp pools. But apparently even they arent fishing really well. Just a whole lot better than the Res. BOF

All the times i've fished it when the waters been well down i've bagged up! Just my opinion but I think it fishes better with less water in it!

Bof if you stand at the boathouse end and look out toward the church at the far left hand side theres a beachy area. I use standard open end feeder tactics with a long tale 4 to 6ft to a 14 barbless with three red maggots on the hook lots of groundbait with hemp castor and dead squatt. Ball it in although i do tend to fish a long chuck! Create your own island! ;D Its always worked for me when the waters been low

Thanks for the help Silver, but it appears to have been to no avail. It seem all the lads I knew of, that fished the place, have drifted away. Mostly since the middle of last year. Some to places like Raygill, (a "commercial" not too far away), some to Pendle etc. Seems a real shame, but "natural" waters, just dont seem to be able to compete these days, and hold the lads attention. Particularly if the lads are stuggling a bit. Wonder what the answer is? BOF

I dont know the place, but with regard to the commercials taking over, it may be wishfull thinking and head in the clouds stuff, but im sure people will drift back to more natural places. I was reading the profiles the other day on the main site, and a lot of people have changed how they fish, me included, more seem to be going to non commercial places. Anglers are a funny lot, I rememer Quivertip saying while pulling another pastie from Lindholme last year, "this aint no fun is it Si" or words to that affect, and hes right. We want things, not too hard and not too easy and im sure alot wouldnt admit it, but thats how i like it, bagging up (not that i have to any massive extent) can be very dull indeed, Bagging up when no one else is i can see being quite satifiying, but s ing a fish or two when things are tough, for me, gives me most pleasure. Couldn't agree more with the both of you ! Too many people turn to the commercial cos its allegedly easier!. I would much prefer to fish a natural water and pit my wits against the fish, its much more satisfying than fishing for stocked fish that hang themselves when there feeding! If anyone fancies a trip to a decent Bream water this year let me know, if i can manage to get the time to go i'll jump at the chance! ;D

You can measure me for the same set of rose tinted specs Si. 'cause I think you are right. I too think that folk will tire of pastie carp, or starving silver's, and will eventually head for wilder waters, with lower stocking levels. If only for a bit of variety ! You only have to look at the numbers of trout anglers that went back to fishing for wild Brown trout once their initial rush to catch easy stockie Rainbows, was satisfied. BOF
