Whilst reading the AT over the last few weeks the letters page has been full of discussion on the local tackle shops & mail order dealers. Now i'm all for supporting your local but what i heard on saturday was unbelievable. I was in leeds and popped into kirkgate for few bits when i overheard an assistant helping a young bloke out, he said he wanted to start fishing and needed the basics to get started. He was sold all the relevant tackle and was on his way out when he popped up " OH I'LL NEED A LICENCE WONT I ?" where are u fishing he was asked "the L&L canal" dont bother he was told you will never be asked! NOW I WONDER WHETHER THEY WOULD SUPPORT HIM & PAY HIS FINE OR WOULD HE HAVE TO BUY CHEAPER MAIL ORDER TACKLE WHEN HIS WAS TAKEN OFF HIM!!!!!!!!

That beats all Neil. Did you put him right as he left or did he manage to drift off ?

That's really bad. I'm quite shocked as I had Kirgate down as one of the better shops in the area. Friendly stafff, knowledgeable and well stocked.
Do you know whether it was one of the staff though, or one of the several lingerers that frequent the shop (all tackle shops have them, you know the sort, knows everything about nothing much).
Still, regardless of who said it, it still is a sad thing to hear. Every time someone gets away with this it encourages others to follow suit.

If a tackle shop suggests a license is not a requirement to fish, then they deserve to go bust.
I've heard of duff info being given regarding tackle ie people starting out and the tackle shop sends the punter away with gear big enough to land a whale, but must say I've never heard of one suggesting not buying a license - very worrying.

was he asking about a rod licence or just a ticket to fish for the day? I have used kirkgate anglers for years, helpful, knowledgeable and fair priced, I wouldnt think they would advocate dodging buying a licence, day ticket maybe- but sure not a rod licence?
