Inspite of being aware of all the dangers and taking the relevant precautions I still managed to bury a float in one of my fingers yesterday when I was retreiving the rig from an underwater snag. The elastic was run round a thick foam padded roller in a line well away from my body, but your hands have still to be there controling the retrieve of the elastic.Somehow the float managed to round the roller and there it was, burried in my finger.Luckly it had a broadish tip less it would have struck bone.It does not bear thinking about as to what damage it would do if it returned at head hight. You need to check and double check that no part of the returning rig can get at you or anyone standing near to you. The 1,000 mph float is not as silly as it seems. Mick "ouch!! Hill

Ooooh Matron ! Speared by your own float Mick.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us, it should serve as a reminder to all who pole fish to indeed be careful when trying to retrieve a snagged rig. I should know, I've snagged and snapped a fair few in my time.

I know everyone will probally know this, but the best way to retrive a rig, in my opinion, from a snag is to wrap your hand in a rag and grab the line and pull the line, not the pole/rod or the elastic, making sure you are pulling as close as you can to the ground. This way the float cannot fly up towards the body, it works for me and i get snagged alot ;D

Heres a cringer for you. A couple of years ago whilst fishing at Clayton ponds I managed to snag up on the sunken tree in the top pond. It was a fairly strong rig as I was tench fishing, 10 elastic. Anyhow, try as I might, I was really struggling to part this rig from the tree, So I foolishly stood up and started walking backwards with my pole, leaving my towel on my box . And then whoosh, out it comes when suddenly my little finger feels very cold. I look down and the wire stem pole float has gone straight through my finger, I almost passed out. The worst moment was having to pull it back through, bearing in mind the stem was approx 4" long and it had all passed through my little finger and become extremely bent, the stem not my finger. Needless to say I did'nt eat my pack-up that day but did continue to fish as there was so little blood with only being a tiny wound!

Gav. when you are snagged 11 metres out once you have unshipped the pole the only thing you get back to pull is the elastic. Remember the only line you have is from the stonfo to the hook.If you could get hold of the line then you could reach the float as there can be as little as 6" from stonfo to float. I would never handle line to pull it from a snag without wrapping it round a landing net handle or similar because modern line under that kind of pressure can sever fingers. The problem ,I am discussing, is particular to pole fishing. The worst senario being if you snag a tree high up.Pole tip must be in the water all the way back then when you have the top 3 ( or whatever is holding your elastic) ease it round the front pole rest, Bank stick, whatever is not going to abrade the elastic and hope to hell it doesn't come free the second you have hold of the elastic. If you are snagged a long way out by the time you can hold the elastic there is massive pressure on it , enough to snap the top 3, so you have no choice but to handle it.There should be a right angle between the elastic to float and elastic to hand. When you think about it if you have the top three in your hands then you could have 1 Metre if elastic extended to 11 Metres. The recoil speed is beyond belief. As a footnote I knew this could happen and took every care to see it didn't happen to me.It still did that is why I am concerned. Stay Safe.....Mick

:DWhat a fantastic idea, I've not heard of that one before I will certainly be sifting through the shed for a couple of likely rings before my next fishing trip. Cheers Rob

8-)any rings will do just as long as they fit over the pole and run smoothly down it whithout damaging the pole i first got the idea when i first started pole fishing and had a season ticket at greasborough dams and was always getting snagged and losing rigs which were exspensive as i was only 14 and bought them with my pocket money and was down to my last rig so i actually used a keyring hoop from my keys and a spool of 5lb line from my box but now i always use cheap 20lb sea fishing line i bought for about £2 from a car boot sale.
hope this tip will serve you well and i am glad to help other people that share the same passion for angling as i do. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Andy, I have copied the post and put it onto the tips and hints section, obviously giving all credit to Rob as it was his idea originally.
Nice one Rob, belting tip I'm sure many people will use. Can't wait for the next fish-in and spying curtain rings in tackle boxes. lol ;D
