Why is it we constantly see such poor fishcare. It's great when you see people posting pictures of fish, but the number of times I'm seeing double figure Carp, big Bream or Tench.... no unhooking mat, people taking pictures stood up. Just seen pics of someone catching a Sturgeon of 20lb, they have an unhooking mat, yet a third of the fish isn't even on it and is on rock hard, boiling hot gravel!!! Same person then stood upright, and not holding the fish correctly. As a pleasure angler irrespective of species I am fishing for, I always have an unhooking mat with me. Even if I place it at my feet or on my footplate at least I always have a soft padded surface as protection. I just don't get people, especially when they are specifically targeting bigger fish species.

Did you have a mat in them 80s/90s? Did you have the NHS in the 30’s? It’s about as logical as your argument...they’re here now...we use them!

My opinion is a large number of fisherman these days care more about putting up photos on Facebook then anything else, I see venues with loads of rules but some anglers don't follow any of them and are not challenged either, fishing just seems to have turned into a contest and I am finding it increasingly difficult to just sit and enjoy my days fishing in my surroundings because what it's turning into, this year has been a joke for idiots surface fishing because of the hot weather no matt sometimes even no net, I had to tell someone to politely get lost lately who started feeding surface baits over my rod's and fishing my swim from the next one, when challenged he just said what's the problem your fishing the bottom, so it's just a change in mentality and its just going to get worse, everyday life now is the same too just full of brain dead idiots.

Completely agree. Unfortunately common sense doesn't seem to apply to some people. I get that people like to take pictures etc, I just think people need to appreciate the health of fish etc. Many people do things the correct way, plenty water, well rested, good nets and mats etc. What I don't like is that people are very quick to point fingers towards kids etc, in fact many culprits I see are in fact adults.

It's mainly adults I see too, plus I'm sure we all as kids could be accused of not handling fish correctly, it just comes with a little practice and respect you gain as you get older.

The Tackle Exchange are selling a combo pack of a large unhooking mat plus a carp cradle for just £16. No excuses really.
