I've been using an Abu 704 for trotting this winter but I am having problems with line not peeling off during the run down river. I reloaded the reel with drennan 3.6lb float fish last month it just seems at certain points I have to flick the tip off my rod to get more line to leave the spool which in turn is affecting my presentation. Could it be that the chenille needs changing on the spool. There is no dirt in the reel and the line lay appears to be great. Any ideas greatly appreciated. Cheers Rob

Hi It could be that the chenille needs changing r you may just have a little too much line on the spool is the line wrapping around the spindle of the reel ?that sometimes happens if the chenille needs changing .I am only commenting on experience with the Abu 1044 506 and 501 which are very similar in design to yours if you are stuck for some new chenille I may have some but sometimes it is best to buy a new spool with new chenille on .Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice mateπI aren't having any problems with line around the spindle so I think I'll put some line on my spare spool and give that a go. The chenille on the spare spool looks in better condition. Thanks for the offer of the chenille but I've ordered some so I'll have a go at reconditioning the problem spool and see how I get on.
Thanks again.

Just a thought mate if you aren't winding the line on to the spool under tension the line can bed in on the line already on the spool and cause the sticking problems you describe .Just a thought. Regards. Steve

Have you got enough line on the spool? I used to have a 507 and that caught regularly, I found the spool was better when full. I think the problem is the narrow spool. I sold it to a friend and bought a centrepin and never looked back. A few years down the line (no pun intended) I won a 1044 and used that a couple of times but still went back to the 'pin. (I had three at one time - including an Adcock Stanton) but don't fish rivers anymore due to being old and knackered. At one time you could buy wired chenille from the haberdashery counter in many big stores - or try a pipe cleaner.

Always use pipe cleaners but to be honest ive never had a close face reel yet where the line dosnt bed in , only really use em on light stick float fishing , if you chucking heavy floats thats yer problem , always beds in especially waggler fishing , think it reels line back on too tightly if you get mi drift
