So only 3rd Pike session of the season today, started at 7.30am and by 9am was in hospital. Hooked some weed whilst fishing with lures, brought the lure in and was clearing the weed off the treble hooks, when I slipped on the bank. Result was the treble going completely through my middle finger and out the other side! Tried flattening the barb and equally tried to snip the hook to pull it through all to no avail. Never ever done this before in my 30yrs fishing but just wanted to stress how careful you need to be especially with damp conditions on the bank. More gutted that conditions were perfect and loads Pike feeding and chasing fish so missed an opportunity of a great am fishing!

I did see the funny side, as the doctor was a Pike fisherman too. As I walked down to his room, he pretended to reel me in!

Nasty !!!!! Though I once had a size 12 barbed in the knuckle joint of my index finger. Not bad on it's own but I was legering at the time and combined with the strong wind the bomb kept swinging away the antireverse was on and I was standing at the time!! I had to feed the hook through until I could squeeze down the barb (olden days when barbs were big) and pull it back through. My Mate wandered over and ended up white !!!!!

Never had any such problems myself but a young lad in Ireland a few years ago got a treble in the palm of his hand whilst pike fishing. The young lad and his mate were using just a spool of line, the lad held the live baited hook and threw it in but made an error. The hook was the rustiest ever. Our driver took him to the hospital and waited to take him home, he lost a days fishing.

Fishing on Martin's Delph in the 70s and fella comes down to see his dad fishing next to me. Casually says "old Sammys caught a bit of big un dad! He's hooked himself in the top lip when he cast in". Cue fun and games extracting a big hook from a 70 year old's lip.

Anyone doing this when fishing with old "Too much gear" here has at least a fighting chance of me being able to snip the barb off, and dab his or her wound with a drop of antiseptic. I'm too clumsy and accident prone to go on a session without at least a notional bit of hook removing kit. BOF

I don't feel bad as such when the points buried, prob cos it rarely bleeds , yours looks far worse.

One thing to mindful of ,is that when you flatten the barb, sometimes you leave a tiny gap tween the barb and the point, its that ,that catches all the little sinews and bits and stops it coming out like a true barbless .

I think that's the issue I had to be honest, I flattened the barb as best I could but clearly not enough as it wouldn't come out. Equally with tackle now virtually indestructible it's not an easy thing to do when fishing alone. I've since bought some very very sharp cutters similar to the ones the hospital used so that in the unlikely event I ever do this again I am in a position to cut the hook (tried and tested the cutters several times and they work a treat)!

Nope can't print a message when quoting with picture. Thanks for trying though. Even so the treble in Hulls finger looks painful.

It really is a good idea to have some proper tools somewhere, whether you leave them in the car, or carry them with you. And if you venture overseas, I class it as essential to have serious cutters, big pliers, antiseptic and ideally a jab or two of local anaesthetic [or a packet of co=codamol] Tropical hooks are a bit heavier gauge than ET trebles!!
