River Aire below Crown point weir was full of fish in the early 90's, Leeds held weekly open matches from Goodman Street down to below Skelton Grange which was known as g section. There were some big catches of quality roach, bream and it was black with gudgeon. If you caught it when the power station was pumping warm water in winter it was on a par with the trent in it's heyday in the 70's. It all went wrong when they diverted the river and installed those two new weirs.

I’ve fished the aire below Leeds for 45 years and a good 30 year a go after trotting for roach all day I packed up and threw the last of my maggots in the river got to the top of the bank had a look back at my peg to see if I’d left anything and could see my maggots on the river bed in about 2 foot of water and they were disappearing!!!! I realised it was a carp of around 2 foot long sucking them up . The fish are there but hardly ever fished for and the stretch I used to fish there are no pegs anymore as it’s very overgrown and the banks are a nightmare and dangerous so who knows what’s in the river
