Quote from today's Yorkshire Evening Post Angling Section
"The news of a UK river record beating 50lb carp from the south of Leeds will take the angling world by storm as details emerge over the next few days.
All I can say is congratulations Steve Catterall – what a fish! I hope to add a bit more next week."
Anyone know anything about this catch?

I've seen big carp in the Aire behind our water on the canal at woodlesford must be 10 years ago. So I guess they have grown since then the fish I saw would have been low doubles. Great news.
Mick.

Personaly I would doubt a fish on a natural river could grow to 50lb unless its been bladdered with high quality boiled baits. But of course i could be wrong Maybe its geneticaly modified

Escapee from willows in 2007 floods, apparently at 30lb+ so put a bit of weight on since

Didnt any carp escape in this winters record floods.....seems more likey....would have thought a carp that size would struggle to maintain such a weight in moving water without lots and lots of boilies and pellets let alone grow to such proportions....theres plenty of carp in the trent and tonnes of boilies and pellets go in the busy stretches mainly for the huge barble but never heard of carp getting to that size....then again it might be one of these super fast growing mutant carp...good catch though either way

Rumour has it the said carp was 52lb and caught from a Wakey book stretch of the Calder, given this there were at least three bivies set up on the River over last weekend trying for a repeat capture..
Just what I've been told fella's haha

Haha....the plot thickens...where the willows is in methley its right near where the calder meets the aire so any escaped fish could easily be in either river.....cant amaging it jumping up any wears like a salmon though and it probably wouldnt fit through a fish pass so shouldn't move upstream

I remember a story in one of angling magazines/papers a few year ago now, some of you may remember? A bream of around 20lb, either just below or just over record British weight can't quite remember. This was found dead in a trout fishery that only ever had flies cast in and probably no loose feed other than the fishery owners pellets or whatever. So tbh it is very possible. There's every chance a fish can thrive in whatever water it lives in, also chances are that it won't. Pictures and other proof would help to prove this. I haven't yet seen any evidence but will be looking around now. If it is true then well done that man, is all I can say. Most carp anglers wait a lifetime for a fish like that.

Lets face it we all like a good rumour or fishy story. I've just googled 'Steve Catterall carp' and the picture is there to see, although the venue is not disclosed for obvious reasons. Last weekend my mate was talking to the carp anglers that were fishing the Calder, supposedly after this 50lb fish, whether the venue is correct or not that is what they were telling him.

I know of one carp around 10lb being caught at woodnook lock, with the floods last xmas anything is possible. The aire around woodlesford was in a terrible state and swillington park is next to the river.

Is it possible that fish escaped from there during the floods? I know the Calder reached record levels near Castleford but not sure exactly how bad it got near Horbury.

By all accounts this fish was one of several lost from the Willows in '07, they're a fast growing strain of carp (Croation in heritage I believe) that seem to have done well in the Aire. The Willows has since had a an otter fence erected this serves to keep the fish in as well as the Otters out. The Carpers around wakey lagoon are targeting a different group of carp lost from the Lagoons/ Charles Roberts ponds and probably further afield over the last decade or so. There are a fair few carp in both the river Calder and Aire due to the floods and the many Stillwater's that lie on the flood plains that contain 'em.

Been told by a mate who seems to be in the know that the otter fence was badly damaged during the winter floods....but apparently none of the bigger fish were lost....just what I was told

The thing that intrests me about this story is..is this carp the 30lb 2007 escapee that has has put on 20lb in 9year on a natural diet in the river which would be astonishing and mean the river is in very good nick with plenty of natural food and must be a excellent environment....or is it a much more recent escapee. ...either way catch of a lifetime regardless

Look at the Barbel in the Don, you would not have believed it a few years ago but they are there in big numbers now. All the Willows fish, (the big ones) are accounted for and putting on just over 2lb a year is on the low side for this strain. Look at the back up fish, they are big as well, like you say, a catch of a lifetime.

Never really think of the aire as the polluted cess pit of years ago....fished it since I was about 16 and always caught fish many different species and in good numbers im 32 now and can never remember it been polluted although my dad can remember when it used to change all different colours due to the dyes dumped in it from the big textile mills in bradford....just found it hard to believe a carp could put on that sort of weight in are northern climate in running water on bloodworm and water snails....I remember reading the monument fishery owner banning maggots because he believed there weren't enough nutritional value for his fish to grow to there full potential and I think your now only allowed to use boilies and pellets....but it does seem that this paticular fish has been in the river a number of years and again nature suprises me
