WEST HOUSE FISHING REPORT January 2015
Date
Fishing report The sport has continued to be excellent through January with the fish being very active indeed due to lower water temperatures and high oxygen content of the lakes. On the warmer days plenty of fish could be seen in the surface layers, which enabled those that wanted to, to stalk fish
The majority of fish came to lures allowed to sink deep down and then stripped back up at a fast pace. In the afternoons there was a noticeable shift in the flies that were catching with smaller stalking bugs or buzzers fished on floating lines and allowed to drift in the wind with the occasional twitch fooling the wary trout!
Catches of the week The average size of fish caught has been in excess of 3lb over January with the best Rainbow caught being over 10lb caught by John Richardson of Barnard Castle who had a great days fishing taking 9 fish in total. Regular angler Tony Morrison had another good session taking twelve fish with one 5lb’er in his total. Peter Williamson and John Williamson made a long journey from Peterborough to fish with us for a couple of days and landed 24 fish between them up to 6lb
Best Flies lures and larger nymphs have been the order of the day fished on a fairly fast retrieve; blue flash damsels, montanas, cats whiskers, dancers, goldhead fritz or epoxy minnows are better in the morning with smaller patterns in the afternoon.
Other The lakes are now open from 8am until 4pm every day
Free tea and coffee is now available from the lodge at West house for anglers
