Just thought i would let you all know about the make over at Poppleton Lakes York. Last spring a few of us regular anglers at Poppleton decided to help out and tidy the place up,platforms were repaired and replaced where needed , trees surrounding the ponds were cut back, enableing accurate casting ,snags were removed from under the water ,the grass was cut and the whole place tidied up. There is still some work to be done and i believe some more fish are going to be added to some of the 6 lakes. If anyone is looking for a good days fishing in the York area Poppy Lakes will take some beating, last summer until now some of the match weights have been fantastic and thats spread over 3 off the ponds. If you would like any info on Poppleton lakes we have started a facebook page where you can view pictures and match results etc,all this work was purely voluntery www.facebook.com/Poppleton.lakes.YorkRobbo

All sounds good but one question if i may. Why were you doing all this work to do the place up when its someone else who owns the place and will reap the benefit and it should be them getting off there backside and doing the work or hiring someone to do it!?!
Its like me renting a house then spending thousands to do it up, totally daft!

maybe theres some free season passes for the lads that helped out , a bit like free rent for work on your rented house if you did it. I used to help out at Pollards pond (Kilpin,Howden) for free fishing when i was younger, worked for me and Jacko. daz

I think this could be considered part of Cameron's vision of Britain - ordinary people stepping in to run services like village post offices and pubs, that may be lost without intervention. I'm not saying Poppleton requires intervention (I've never been), but maybe it's customers just take an active role.
(This kind of thing has of course been going on long before Cameron arrived on the scene)
I wouldn't step in at faceless corporation like Costa or Tesco to work on the tills. However if Jim the landlord at the end of my street was struggling to keep things going - I think I'd hate to lose my local watering hole for the sake of doing him a favour. And doing a favour can be quite fun e.g. Pulling a few pints or chopping a few trees with some mates. I think it's a peculiarity of grown men that they often like to do manual work as long as it's different to their day job.
