Hello everyone, I have just become a member of the site so hopefully will be able to get more from my fishing, I have just started coarse fishing last june, however I have been a keen fly fisherman for over 25 years but due to a major operation for cancer I find it difficult to cast the fly rod. While sat at home recovering from my op a good friend of mine perswaded me to buy a cheap float rod and reel and he would pick me up when he was going fishing on an evening for a couple of hours.
That turned out to be fatal... I love this style of fishing better than fly fishing. So much so I now have float rod and reel, feeder set up and thanks to my family I have just bought a maver pole so looking forwards to trying that out in my local water around Pickering, Scarborough, Malton and York but that might not be untill spring depending on the weather and wether you guys tell me to get out and use it now as I still dont know what to fish for in winter months but no doubt someone will keep me right
I do hope to join in the posts if I can be of any help or advice to anyone
tight lines and a merry xmas to you all
Charlie

Thanks Guys
I might have a go at winter fishing there seams to be plenty near to me, not sure where the oaks are? is that the one at Thirsk called Woodlands ??
I have been catching fish on Scarborough mere and Don's Pond at East Hesleton which is just off the A64 between Malton and Scarborough, I have had some great days there with carp up to 12lb but been told there are bigger ones in there but when you catch about a dozen of those to 12lb in a day that has been a great days fishing for me as a newcomer, Beats fly fishing for 1lb trout anyday.

Whilst your drop down (only joking) to coarse angling has unfortunately been an enforced one, it's great to hear that such a move can be so rewarding. Many anglers move the other way and find the same thrill and enjoyment as you have. It just goes to show that there are so many facets to this wonderful sport that we should never get bored with it. Welcome to the land of the addicted!

Hi Charlie, I also fish the Mere at Scarborough occasionally. Used to be a member there until it got too weedy so, like you, just go for a few hours of an evening in the summer months. I work at Pindar's in Eastfield so it's only a 5 min drive after work. It fishes a lot better now than a few years ago. Although I'm not really au fait with fishing the float - tackle box kitted out for ledgering - I do have the odd float. Either way, I would be only too willing to enjoy a few hours evening fishing with you come the summer. Welcome to YF mate.

I tend to use a method feeder or shotgun feeder on the yachting pond on the mere and have caught some good carp, I will pm you my e-mail and we can meet up some time for a fishing session. Cheers Charlie
