If your fishing in dark then you'll need a torch or something so you can keep a eye on end of your rods. Get a range of leads to suit the tide conditions. Don't be fooled into buying a 15ft or 18ft rod for the extra casting distance. It isn't needed.

Hello Chris
I use much the same as Finny has suggested but instead of 20lb mainline i use 15lb, reels are the multiplier type which i use on 12ft rods and you may want to invest in a few breakaway type leads, you know the ones with the grip wires attached that help you hold bottom in heavy tidal flows, the wires fold back and are locked into position with coloured collars, makes getting your rig back a lot easier, oh and always use a shock leader, the last thing you want is five ounces of lead cracking off on the cast and hitting someone out for a bit of a paddle......not good
Be safe and have fun

I've seen a few crack off's, everyone scatters when there's a 5 ounce lead fly up in the air. Also don't fish on rocks or beaches at night unless your with an experienced angler. ;D

Buy a tide book too! About a quid from a angling shop around where your fishing.

I always fish from piers, harbour walls or beaches where you can get off easy.

Me and my dad were fishing at Cayton Bay once on a sand rise and the sea come in behind us and we only realised when it was about waist height.
