A few years ago when I lived in Scarborough a couple of old sea dogs told me about monstrous Eels that lived in the harbour around where the trawlers unloaded their fish.Apparently fish guts,s s of fish and other tasty morsels are dumped into the harbour in this area and the Eels were thriving. One night me and some mates went down to try to catch these Eels but we didn't even get a bite between us.I was wondering if any one reading this has ever heard of or seen one of these Eels?Maybe the old fellas I spoke to were pulling the wezzys leg?

I may be wrong mate, but i dont think eels in the sea, get to monstrous sizes, as they migrate to the sargasso to breed and then die, before they get to these kind of sizes, that is, unless someone knows different.

Think he's talking about Congers.
You might well have got some in there when it was a more active fish port. Don't think they do any fish processing there anymore so I would imagine the Congers (mostly?) have gone.
The new sea defenses might hold some once they have matured a bit. They are mainly huge rocks and concrete that have lots of hiding holes in amongst them.

I have got a few congers many years ago, from Hartlepool pier. Nasty things, they take your fingers off, if your not careful. Lets hope the winds and drop in temperature brings the cod in.

Its not impossible Peterpiker, sometime in the 70's I cant quite remember the year but we had a proper cold winter and the sea temp dropped quite considerably (alot colder than it normally gets in the winter), hundreds of Conger eels washed up dead on the Yorkshire coast, so they are present

Tommy,Iam talking about Conger Eels mate, not the freshwater type.I know the lads who went out after Crabs/Lobsters used to catch smallish Conger in their pots from time to time and I just wondered if any one had heard of any coming out of the harbour.Cheers,P.P.

Whether they are there are there now or not there are some interesting times to come along the East coast. Yes, tragically, global warming has caused the shift but I can see a time when there will be shark and tuna - yes, I know 'tunny' fishing used to be popular off Scarborough - boats leaving the popular ports and mullet fishing in the harbours.

Dave Once watched a programme on TV about tuna fishing in Scarborough, they used to get towed about for hours in a small rowing boat ;D

For me, Scarborough has never been a good beach fishing but there always seems to be some anglers on the wall next to the penguin pen.
If you've got children go down the stairs onto the little stream with all the rocks. It used to keep me and my sisters entertained for hours building dams and stuff.
I haven't been to scarborough in a while but a few months ago the harbour was full of boats and could make casting impossible. If you can get on the piers though then it can be great fun.
Do you know where the Boyes is? If so then go to the bottom floor where all the furniture is and then go out the back door and there should be a tackle shop, Scarborough Angling Centre I think, it could have closed down but I doubt it, if so then try your luck at G B Angling just up the hill across the road from the life boat shed. The owner of the Scarborough Angling is a exceptionally friendly man with a goldmine of infomation but it takes a while to get away from him so beware!!! It once took us 3 hours of fierce talking to get away.
Beach casting isn't just about throwing a big weight as far as you can mate, its more about precision and timing. Look about on internet and it can give you some crucial tips.
Good luck

I can't remember the exact year but i'm guessing somewhere in the late 80's. i saw a bloke pull a eel out of Scarborough harbour, he was struggling really bad with it ( trying to get it up 20ft from the water ) some fisherman ended up going out in a rowing boat & fetching it up the stirs for him. I'd have no idea how big it was or how much it weighed as loads of people were crowding round & i only saw from a distance.
The only other fish i've seen pulled out on the pier have been flatties.
