HI All
I have never done any sea fishing well apart from a crab line as a kid. It's somthing i have always wanted to give a proper go.
Could someone give me some pointers i.e. What time of the year is best, Boat or beach, Where is the best place for absolute beginner to go to?

i did some sea fishing last year when i went to visit my mum in wales i used my carp rods and pike trebles in sand eels on one rod and a size 8 hook and black lug worm on the other fishing from a groin at full tide had great fun catching loads of small whiting . the line i used was 20lb maxima and i had a running ledger of three ounce on both rodsit was a bite a chuck so go have fun with a couple of carp rods and some big pit reels you don't need much else hope this helps regards malc.

Only done a bit of sea fishing but I will be going over the weekend to Scarborough. On the east coast the main target from shore seems to be winter cod and as far as I can tell they come inshore with the first of the winter storms. Just taking a heavyish rod that will throw up to 5oz of lead and the rest is just regular pike/carp scale gear. 20lb mono would be about right (I'm giving braid 50lb braid a try this time) It's probably better to get your terminal kit when you get your bait. All the angling shops I have been to are really helpful as regards hooks baits tatics etc. There are plenty of websites dedicated to sea fishing in particular areas with diagrams and tips. northeasttopmarks.forumup.info/www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk/index.phpApart from not giving away particular "marks" I have found sea anglers a lot more helpful than their inland bretheren. They seem to have a lot more time for beginners. This time out I'm fishing at night - not reccomended for beginners. Which brings me to ... safety. The sea is a lot more dangerous than it looks. Get the basics somwhere safe like a sea wall in calm weather (and don't assume it will stay safe) . Pay attention to tides and the weather forecast. Even easy looking marks can turn nasty very quickly. They quite often shut Marine Drive in Scarborough and sometimes people ignore the closure. More than once a wave has taken a two ton car and the family in it out to sea.

There is a few cod coming in at Whitby, as for safety I would only fish from piers and harbour walls, leave the beaches and rocks to the experts. ;D

Got one of these the other day, might not suit "pro's" but I tried it Friday night and it seemed fine to me ... www.fishingmegastore.com/acatalog/Beach_Surf_Rods.html(Ron Thompson Zensorflex) If you are looking for a "starter" kit can't see much wrong with it. Happily chucked out 6oz a long way. Be warned though, you won't be using it for trotting - it's a beast, can see why eveyone on the beach uses a tripod.

hi mate if you go sea fishing make sure you are going with someone that knows what they are doing. saftey is always a first when sea fishing!!!!!!. sea fishing is not like course fishing you have to take into account tide times , size of tide (this determines where and when you can fish certain venues). weather plays a major factor when sea fishing (saftey wise and also affects fishing) if you can always go at low water as to find hot spots which might hold fish when the tide is rising. if you need any more info dont hesitate to email me and i will try and help you out if i can cheers

Just a little tip if your going beach fishing and if you take a lot of gear with you - make a little 'base camp' where you know the sea will not reach and attach a little green glowing snap stick to it and then just take a little rucksack/day sack with you essential kit in and then it makes it a lot easier if tide comes in quickly or if you want to follow the tide out. Does anyone know how scarborough boats have been doing laterly and if any reports have come back from around that area?

Another tip which must be adhered to is "use a shock leader" when beach casting. The strain of casting a weight any distance puts a lot of strain on the line. As a basic rule, use twice the rod length of leader, and multiply the casting weight by 10, i.e 4oz lead, 40lb leader. These leads can kill when travelling through the air.
