Drayton is immense, most baits will catch but I've always done well on catmeat...white boilies are supposed to do well also I hear. Pellet wag is also popular there, you'll see plenty of beasts crashing about on top. It can drop off a little through the day sometimes but don't be disheartened, the evenings are mental and your arms will proper ache.
You will catch anywhere, but as Binner says the boards (where the sailing club is) are notoriously good. That side of the res also gets the sun through the day so I always go on that side.
Have fun, but be warned...it will spoil you!
PS....use a pole at your peril!

Wouldn't ever want to take a pole to this venue these days, might have been fine when it was stocked originally but I have never had UK carp pull back like these, did 2 nights and was literally black and blue, non stop fish had to pull in to get a few hours sleep. Ached that much I had to pull a sickie when we got back, couldn't lift up my arms.

Waterlicked there is quite a bit of info on Drayton on the site, all you needed to do was do a search (small "Search" tab above the YF banner). This year Barnsleyandy, and Scouse11 have put their bits in about baits etc., and I put a map with the better pegs on it, but I also put that the best bit of info was to ask the bailiff for advice. We do this every time, (despite going down every year since' 07), when we phone to book on. It is a long way down, and thus very expensive in fuel, to go without a clear idea of where is fishing well. I too have fished the dam wall and the fish did not get round there till late enough on to make me worried see my report here:- "Had my own "off the wall" moment yesterday, we ( Spudgun, Chris, and Sam) arrived at 7.30am (ish), and were fishless until mid afternoon, cooking slowly on the exposed platforms. It was all looking very embarrassing. Come 3.30pm however and like the switching on of a machine, the Carp arrived in my peg in a feeding mood, and in an hour or so the fish topped and shouldered all over the dam wall area. However they didn't seem to go anywhere near the two leger rigs I had out, (nor the others for that matter). I must point out at this juncture that the water off the dam wall was around 8ft deep under the rod tip, dropping to around 30ft at 30yds range, or so, and I realized that the tight line in mid water, may be spooking the fish. So I switched to fishing with slack lines, ie I let the rig and PVA net of pellets sink on a slack line untill it hit bottom, then dropped the rod tip till it touched the sand in front of the peg, and slowly tightened the line letting it run along the bottom, and lifted the rod up to the alarms still letting slack line off the spool. Ok, you dont get drop back bites, but the screamers when the fish ripped off with the bait left nothing to the imagination. Finally one made a mistake, and it all went on from there. Soon fish after fish began zipping off with the boilie, ("Howard the rigs" barbless flouro rigs working faultlessly, as usual), and a hectic s developed. I really understand the suggestion to take one rod out at this point, as I was working like someone demented to tie the PVA nets of boilie and mini pellet fast enough to keep two rods in the water, after I used up the pre tied ones I had prepared. It was manic! Especially with two fish being played at the same time, (something that occurred quite frequently). Finally I dropped off a fish in mid s , and I did something I have never done before in over 40 years of fishing, simply sinking back on my seat, and saying "thank G** for that!", I was totally exhausted, and almost out of bait. What a day! Frankly I was completely exhausted, and had totally lost count of the numbers of fish. Ok the biggest we had between us (Spudgun) was only around 15 / 16lb, (smallest, which was one of mine around 8 / 9lb), but the shear number of them were mind boggling, so if it has to be BIG Carp and BIG only, then dont go to Drayton. Yes, there are large fish in there (c40lb), but simply isolating them from the run of the mill fish, would be a nightmare. No, go for the experience of a completely different world, and be prepared for it to leave you whacked out." Maybe next time eh lads? BOF

Nice write up Bof. Shame we didn't have quite the same experience the day we went, but im sure with the right weather conditions and now the experience of being there and fishing it next time will be better. Both my carp came from off the bottom at about 40yds the common to flavoured soaked pellets on the method feeder and the mirror carp too a white chocolate boilie attached too a stick pva of 4 more boilies. The Baliff did tell us too fish under the rod tip from around 3/4 p.m but it was that choppy and misearable and i think the carp stayed further out at 30ft, there was very little carp showing all day.

Totally wierd place Drayton, at 3pm when the daily matches finish it is almost as if someone has rung Pavlovs bell and all the carp in the lake come really close in looking for the bait that's been thrown in at the end of the matches, that's when it gets a bit hectic.

it's a shame that so many knowledgeable lads weren't able to point us in the direction of the "good pegs" before we went. lol, did you not read the thread?

so is the place open 24hours now.it din,t used to be did not open till 7 am last time i was there and the gates were locked at dusk.there was no night fishing at all so first come first served.as i said in a ealier post best thing is to pre book the pegs but also lok into stockton waters or clattercotes.i have been lucky i had a cracking day at drayton which i enjoyed but i,m in no hurry to go back there

No, as far as I know the place isnt open 24 hours, the gates are shut and locked as before, (shut each evening till 7am). The only swims that are "booked" are the limited number of bivvy swims. As for the "first come first served" rule, I have seen guys arrive at 5 am climb the gate and nip round to the favoured pegs with their kit then go back and wait for the official opening time. BOF
