This is an old quarry that was home to remains of a sabre tooth tiger - now residing in Buxton Museum.
I went past this place to school for years and never realised it had fish in it but I'm told it was stocked 30 years ago!
The water can be crystal clear and it often looks like there's no sign of life at all, but believe me, there is monsters down there
The pool is now run by the Victory Quarry Angling Club but day tickets are available - I think it's £2 a day and you can pay on the bank.
There was one big pool and a smaller one, but the water level has receded to the extent that the big pool has now left a smaller pool adjacent to it.
The big pool has two shelves, at present the water on the edges was about 3ft, going up to 8ft, but then a shelf takes it down to 25ft and a further shelf takes it to 85ft
The smaller pool has a small vertical rock face at one end which currently goes to about 8ft deep. Floating dog biscuits and bread close to the wall can produce good results on the right day I'm told.
I hardly had a bite until I moved to the shallow end and tried close to the only weeds on the ponds - it took a while but I finally had a big take from something lurking in the weeds. It was over in seconds as I was soon snagged. I'm told there are good carp, tench, silvers and koi plus perch in this pool. It has recently had all carp over 18lb taken out and into the big pool.
The main pool holds fish up to 25lb perhaps more - talking to people no one knows what it really holds.
One guy did tell me that 4lb perch were in there, 2lb+ roach and that he had caught a number of carp that still had their curtains - they had never been caught. I've had reports of fish that just run and run and snap you off every time you try and turn them.
I did land one carp from the currently estranged pool from the main pool and it put up one hell of a fight. At first I thought it had snagged me as it was just solid but to my surprise it was still on. I had to walk down the bank to pull from a different direction to finally free it from whatever it was using as cover - I think it was held up behind a rock on the pool bottom.
I finally landed a lovely coloured mirror that I guessed was only about 4lb but discovered after putting it back it had almost straightened a Korda carp hook size 10! The fish I got in the weeds also did the same!
It's a hard place to fish, but if you fancy a challenge and not knowing what you might hook into, if you're in the area, check it out.
