I just wondered if anyone has fished from shore around Funchal! Do i need a licence of any kind and whats the best plan of attack! It is rumoured the capitol of the world for Marlin/billfish and im planning a trip out on a tuna boat to try my luck, but id like to give the shore a go too as there must be some good sport to be had with Mullet, small Baracuda and Wahu and the host of other exotic species hanging around the jetties. I may give the fly a go if suitable, but im planning on spinning with small mepps and small Bass surface poppers, plus feathers and bait rigs! Any advice and information woud be most welcome.

Fishing was pretty poor from shore! as its hard to find a good spot thats not packed with locals fishing, but they were catching small stuff using pike floats and a couple of feet of depth to the baited hook. I gave all my plugs and spinners a bash but no joy. I did go out on a Marlin boat and the guy on the next rod caught a 230lb big eye tuna. and a Marlin was caught on the last day i was there, but not much had been caught the previous week nor the week i was there really. From what i coud pick up the fishing has been generally poor this year. I'm still planning to go back in the winter though when the Wahoo season starts.

Few lads from here have been over, but they went on to Porto Santo, the fishing is better or used to be, they fished the harbour, and caught sorry hooked eagle rays , they landed one eventually by jumping in a boat and rowing after it, about 120lb, few little moray eels. the boat fishing was far better, lots of small skipjack tuna on bar type lures, but they ended up crewing on a charter boat. Colin[lad who went] says anytime for the shore really ,but nov onwards for the big stuff offshore Saw an article by Graeme Pullen, he was catching six gilled sharks, on the drop offs ,not that expensive at the time in comparison to the marlin fishing
