Does anyone agree with me that the amount tackle shops charge for lugworm is a rip off. Went for my first beach session the other day and got some black lugworm from East Coast Tackle in Hornsea for £4 and recieved about a dozen worms in some rolled up newspaper. On inspection the worms seemed motionless and were excreting a mixture of substances including blood. Was just wondering if this was the normal quality to expect or that I had been ripped off for some poor quality bait.

When we get Lug I think we pay around £7 for a 1/4lb, and they always seem motionless in comparison to Ragworm, I think the point of them is a smelly bait that secretes lots of juices, flavour etc and this is what catches the fish

Black lug are fairly lifeless, *i think* from the occasions i have used them, well i say used.... been 'given' from people leftovers. But i have to say, not being a massive sea angler i'm not overly clued up on aquatic worms, so i don't know if the black lug sold layed out full length, in a roll of newpaper are the same species you get if you ask for some 'fresh lug' in the tackle shop... They're different arent they? The ones i get vary in colour from like a reddy brown, to very dark brown. But i always get fresh lug, and if i can't get any, i don't get it. The ones sold pre packed are always layed out in rolls...... I've noticed the Lug i do get from North Bay tackle in Bridlington vary in quality. It's not so much the price that bothers me.... i think they're under £4 if my memory serves me right. Sometimes i get them and they're very large, fat, with some motion and others they're not a fraction of the quality.... scraggly, all bust and motionless. I can't understand why. But i think it may be down to how the tackle shop stores them too Maybe you can suggest why ryan...

Lol just kidding mate ;D I understand that it probably is hard work to collect lug and I am prepared to put my hand in my pocket for some decent bait. But either they were fine and it was just me or that I was paying a tad too much for about a dozen worms in a bit of damp newspaper. Where abouts do you lads dig for lug then? Would not mind doing a bit myself to save a few quid.

Do the shops gut the "black" lug to keep it longer John? could be why it looked a bit lean, and fluid leaking out of it?
we rarely get what you refer to as black lug [about a ft long, liqourice tough skin?] normally only when digging white rag, but i always found trying to keep it live was difficult even fridged, so squeezed the guts out and rolled in paper. blow lug leaks a lot of clear/blood shot fluid even when "live"

Yes thats black lug. If they blow that stuff out it means they are dead they have killed themselves. the best way to store black lug is in a large container holding salt water with an air pump in the fridge. If you change the water everyweek and dont touch the worms when doing this they will last as long as you want depending on the volume of water and the amount of worms in there. Dont make it too cramped either. They will last as long as you want then, hope this helps mate (PS: In shops they do gut and freeze them to make them last longer and not go all soggy etc but stay fresh)

The Bait u bought from keith at east coast tackle will have been "gutted" blacks (known as slaps) they are black lug with the guts squeezed out
to put them on the hook u need to smack them down hard on the top of ur box, this makes the worm tense up into a leather liquerice type worm and is easy to hook
£4 for 10 is the goin rate

£2.50 a doz over here, and thats for average sized blow lug, so your prices aren't excessive.
tonight .....Tight lines piece by Alan Yates, on pumping for black lug, excellent piece that showed you exactly what to do ,both collecting and storing
