Dan,
Q... If the cod were not caught would they not grow to the sizes they are capable of ? .. Doesnt actually say the fish have migrated North either but that the copepods that the young cod eat have BUT the cod wont follow because its too deep. No point the big cod migrating north for these either it also states that their is an abundance of big cod bait which (crabs etc) which again is also limiting the small cod food supply.
So... if there is plenty of big cod food.. but little small cod food would there not be more big cod and fewer small cod... You have also mentioned that the numbers of smaller cod have increased because they are small enough to escape the nets but this doesnt really help in allowing cod to grow on to be large enough to eat the abundance of big cod food ! ! !....
So........ If the fishing was held back for some cod to grow on big enough to eat some of the crabs and reduce their numbers, so that they have less of an affect on the plankton which the smaller cod need to grow on into big cods.. Would it not balance itself out ? ? ?
COD i am confused ! !

Some day I will tell thi a story about Canibal Lake.. if you had the power to stop two thing's in the UK today, you would have Cod coming out your lugs.. One is over fishing by dragers witch is a fact and Two human waste being pumped into the sea witch is also a fact.. and please not global warming.. i.e. -35 today.. I rest my case....................

Dan my theory on the scientific studies is that they are looking for other reasons as the EU don't have the money to pay skippers to stop fishing for 5-10 years. So they blame everything but over fishing. I think the only reason the cod is hanging on is some of the more northern country's manage their fisheries better and some of their juvenile fish are topping up the north sea. On the subject of Norway I know there getting fed up of German anglers in the south of Norway and the amount of large cod they are taking and say some areas are fishing worse because of this.

Well that's rubbish Yorkiman because the Human waste being pumped has got and is getting cleaner, and the only real thing that effects the fish physiologically are the endocrine distruptors i mentioned that everyone has dismissed. Again, i'd like to know what 'dragers' are.... ...... Trawlermen or any fisherman don't use them. The scouring and damage to the sea bed is done by trawlers. A different thing. Paul, i can fully see the viability in the first point of your post. But they haven't blamed everything but overfishing. A lot of the articles have been joint on the subject of overfishing explaining how global warming is effecting the stocks already depleted by the overfishing. The ones that are solely on Global warming, are speaking in the above context also... not that global warming is ruling out overfishing, because it certainly isn't. Yorkiman... -35... what the hell are you on about to be fair? The North sea temperatures have risen by a degree! No idea what you are trying to say, or indeed where you have got the figure from. Dan.

Well that's rubbish Yorkiman because the Human waste being pumped has got and is getting cleaner Dan, as you say, "has got and is getting cleaner"... but cannot be ignored to what was being pumped in having a possible effect. How long would it take a cod to reach 30lb ? Again, i'd like to know what 'dragers' are.... ...... Trawlermen or any fisherman don't use them. The scouring and damage to the sea bed is done by trawlers. A different thing. Dan, A drager is a type of fishing vessel that drags a net. "Dragging/Trawling A fishing dragger can be anywhere in size from a small boat to a vessel over 100' long. All draggers generally employ the same basic method to catch fish - A net is dragged behind the vessel (it is usually weighted, because the target is often groundfish or mid-water fish), and essentially "scoops" fish up as the vessel moves through the water at slow speed. There are many variations - the net may be hand-hauled, or more often, hauled up with a winch, one or two vessels may tow the net, and there are various net shapes (most are conical). Target species include cod, haddock, pollock, flounder, herring, and mackerel." Yorkiman... -35... what the hell are you on about to be fair? The North sea temperatures have risen by a degree! No idea what you are trying to say, or indeed where you have got the figure from. -35 degrees TODAY.. i.e. where he lives ! ! IF you havent figured it out, its not yorkshire... Been cold lately but not that cold....

Yes, if toxic enough, it could kill the fish, although seafish have the option of swimming away as soon as they get the slightest incling of a pollutant that could harm them.
Truth be told, i am not sure about current growth rates of Cod, i think they reach around 2-3 lbs in as many years if well fed... although i could be completley wrong, so logic would dictate a much longer period for fish to reach 20lbs.
My bad, thank's for that, i asked once, as i didn't know. So i stand educated. Thank you Naf. I thought he had mis-spelt dredger. Apologies.
Moving on, all i have to say to that last bit is gutted, but i bet that's not as cold as it used to be at this time of the year ;D ;D

Thats the thing Dan cod are not getting to 20lb because most are getting caught in the first 1-5 years of life. If all commercial cod fishing was stopped for 5 years the numbers would soon go up.

I know that mate .... it's been proven that the new fishing methods and quotas have boosted stocks by 5% as i said somewhere in my previous posts.

Yes but that 5% don't make it to the sizes they should. In the next 5 years I think Mackerel will also crash due to the scottish boats catching thousands of tons in each haul.

Dan, Just so I clealy understand, you disagree that over fishing is not the problem and human wast is also not the problem, in reduced catches in and under the North Sea.......

Dan, How in gods name can you say that fish stocks have increased by 5% when we can't even tell you with any certainty what is in our lakes. ??? How do you count them or is this another "scientific fact".

Yorkiman....No i agree that Overfishing is the primary problem, backed with the second of global warming and other issues which are more minor which Martin has mentioned a lot of.
I think we ought to agree to disagree on this and change the subject, as yes, for once, CM, you're spot on. I'm bored with this whole conversation. Hows the bearn doing?

Just had a look at the results of the Whitby uptiding festival. For those who don't know its a 7 day festival with winners for the biggest cod of the day and the overall winner which is biggest cod of the week. Biggest cod of the week 9lb 6.5oz not even a double shows the sad state of north sea cod fishing.
