Does anyone do this or know anyone who fishes from a kayak?
I'm interested in taking up the sport. for when I go on holiday in Scotland.
Should I take a course in kayaking? I'm interested in spinning and fly fishing from a kayak.

there are a quite a few "chaps" who practice the art of angling from a piece of plastic over here Artic, it has a novelty value, but in areas of fast tide ,too much like hard work for me.plenty of oppourtunity mind.

it's hard enough controlling your boat if the water's a bit choppy or you're at sea ...... and it's hard work on the back too . Then i'm supposed to catch fish sounds brilliant fun ....go for it arctic , i'd advise you to be accomplished in the eskimo roll before you venture out though ;D

It is not as bad as you think, you can cover water quickly, they are very stable(both me and my mate not small blokes, I am nigh on 18st) there is loads of info about rigging and setting them up for maximun efficiency and safely online with directions & photos for setting up a trolley anchor system for safely anchoring anywhere and rigging up for fishfinders, fitting hatches, rod rests, rudders and even electric outboards! My Mrs has a O.K. Caper lady angler and goes out with me on the lakes and even on moderately lumpy seas with no trouble! you just have to be responsable and take every precaution when going out to sea and stick within your limits, take safetly gear with you like compass, GPS, VHF, flares, inform coastguards and use your brain and if its gonna be stupid then don`t go out! No need for eskimo rolls either as it is done almost exclusively on sit-on-tops, but if you`ve looked into it even a little you will know this
There is a thriving sea kayak fishing community on the east coast and the fact is it does work and people catch plenty of fish that possibly would not have been caught from the shore or from "proper" boats and if you can contact them I`m certain that they`ll let you meet them and have a little go on one of their meets. Many anglers from B.A.S.S. and the likes are making the crossover for just that reason and very little "novelty value"at all and you will find on their forum and many other sea fishing forums there is devoted areas for kayak fishing.
There was also a large artcle in last months Pike and Predators mag if you can still get hold of one. Try the speciallist forums as we did when first started (anglersafloat is the best one) you will find the community very friendly, helpfull and supportive. But importantly they actually know what they are talking about. Take it from me, someone who does it and knows, it is brilliant fun and the social side of it is good. We are currently arranging regular trips this coming yr up the Lakes, seafishing on the east coast and some Bass trips to N.Wales as well as a possible flyfishing outing on a northern prolific trout fishery.
Besides if you were to go for it and get an ocean kayak model and then don`t get on with it you will find they make good ££ on the second hand market!
