im wanting to dip my toes in to match fishing whats the best way to start. is trying to get into the wakefield angling club the best way or fish some open matches first. i try and get down to watch some of the matches and il admit ive learnt more by just watching them than i could ever on my own (just a bit wary incase i join the match scene and blank every match )lol also is it really nescessary to take that much tackle with you all the matches ive watched theyve all had about a wagon full of tackle with them so any pearls of wisdom from you lads is apreciated on the best tackle and what i need to take and how to go about it all ;D

hi for starting off i would fish the yf matches. even though they are only freindly matches they are some good anglers ,and you could pick some tips on how to go about it all.there is also y.m.a matches were you can just pay your peg fees and not pay pools but still be involved in the match situation. as for wakefield angling club they are a good set of lads but are all very good anglers and you would be classed as they say as pools fodder. cheers fredythespark

sorry to sound stupid but what do u meen pools ? The pools are the monies paid in by each angler and which are then paid out in prize money, usually 1st,2nd and 3rd and also section wins.Obviously if you don't pay into the pools you can't win any prize money. As Freddy says, the yf matches are just for fun(no prize money) but would be a good way to start. The lads are all very friendly.Give it a try ;D sharpy

I myself am in the same situation want to start match fishing but not sure where. I live in South Yorks so anywhere in this area would be fine and it doesn't really matter of the day of the week either. I work shifts so get various days off during the week etc.
So any help any1 can provide would be welcome.

Yeh guys, I agree with the lads on coming down to a YF match (Althoguh i've yet to get to one ) ....The lads that fish there will help in any way possible i'm sure . I wanted to recommend some items of tackle for you though that will benefit your fishing second to none as you asked. I advise you to get a 'good' seatbox i.e. one with levelling legs and a footplate if you don't already have one. Look into the Preston OnBoxes, the maver Club, Pro and MX1000 and i recommend the Ron Thompson carbonite as it's the best value box on the market. It is important to have a good box for all your odds and ends of tackle and to make sure you are comfortable as the last thing you want is to be uncomfy. I would also advise you to invest in the best pole you can afford as in match fishing, They are a must have 9/10 times. I recommend the Map TKS 10 or 20 as starter poles as they are the best value poles you can get to start off with. A good waggler and feeder rod are also worth buying then you have all aspects covered. However if you don't like the look of investing in or using a pole then you can manage just fine with a waggler rod and a feeder rod it just helps to have all the gear once you know how to use it all because some methods have their days over others and if you don't have that method at your disposal then your at an immediate disadvantage. Unfortunatley the only problem is with match fishing is it can be quite expensive....many of the match anglers here will have well in excess of a grand, maybe even two grands worth of gear. But it's no good having all the gear and no idea so to gradually get in to the match scene by learning whats what and different tactics one at a time, So start with pole fishing and move on to such and such and so on. Or learn whatever your comfortable with in stages. Once you have the knowledge, then it's a case of having better more expensive gear in your armoury, But not until. Regards & Good luck with it, Dan

Hello all, Pretty new to the site and been fishing again for about 3 years after a 10 or so year lay off. Been looking to fish a couple of matches, nothing too serious just a bit of a laugh and some friendly competition. Just after a few pointers really as to the best way to go about it, would fishing some YF Matches be a good way to start ? if so whats the best way to go about getting involved ? Any help much appreciated. Cheers
