I've never fished in scotland mate, but if i was going up there, i'd be inclined to use bait, ie- squid, mackerel, peeler crab, black lug ect, good luck ;D

Where about is the pier? most places that far north should have a few coalfish/pollack about. , . use carp/pike gear, simple bullet /barrel lead, stopped by a bead and swivel. 3-5ft trace and use a sandeel or a imitation one, [storm/delta type] on the end of that. fish close to the bottom during the day ,but late evening /dark both fish will come up into midwater ,especially if some lights on the pier. proper bottom fishing may require more substantial gear. try find out where and i may be able to give you some more specific help

Hi js. looked on google, unfortunately, the definination is poor, so cam only give you an idea. there is plenty of sand around, so you may get the odd dab, small plaice on the bottom possibly a few small whiting, again early or late ,or better still after dark, its probably fairly shallow, given that its north eastern facing. so while there will be fish ,don't expect monsters use carp /pike gear. or a heavy feeder rod? small worm or fish strips. with a running ledger. i apologise if i'm wrong, but i assume your fairly young? please ,if you are DON'T go down any cliffs on your own . its not worth the risk. if its a working fish port, have a look for some grey mullet. normally they will be wandering around, in shallow water too. use bread,or fish bits. on float gear.very good fun. but you may be too far north at this time of year. good luck and have a nice time jsyman

James I had a holiday at Mellon udrigle a couple of years ago, and we'll be back later this year. It's a fantastic place for a holiday There's no pier nearby (1 10miles south at Gairloch) but you should be able to spin off the rocks. I borrowed a boat off the beach with permission (not available now i gather) and had quite a lot of pollack on spinners/feathers only 40-50 yards out so with a decent cast you should reach some off the rocks. The beach is sandy but quite popular during the day with bathers and body boarders. If you're staying nearby I would (will) fish early and late. There are some serious cliffs West of Mellon and around Greenstone Point so I'd stay clear of those, but at Mellon itself you can get to the water OK. Are you staying in the chalets (sheds really!) near the beach? Mark

James
I was fishing feathers witha biggish spoon to give some weight, some casts were picking up 2-3 fish at a time, not big but they put a bend in a light spinning rod. I'm going to take some old fly tackle this time, the Pollack and Mackerel would be fantastic sport on the fly. We went for a day trip to the beach last year (Not from Yorkshire, we were staying at Gairloch) and one of the locals said he catches Pollack off the rocks with silver toby. Where did you book to go boat fishing? I could quite fancy a trip, and when do you go? Tight lines Mark

James
Nice Trout, well done, I'll bet they made a good meal.
I've found the sea fishing in Scotland hard work, lot's of blanks but when it's good it's very good, keep trying.
