Any USB mouse should work just fine...presuming the laptop is running Windows XP or Vista.

Should the laptop detected the external mouse even though i have not logged on, or will it have to be installed

No, keyboard and mouse drivers will be loaded very early on in the boot-up process. If they weren't you wouldn't be able to move the mouse on the boot-up screen or type in your password. Don't try anything 'fancy' like an optical mouse, 'cause that 'may' not work....if you have a usb mouse with a ball, Windows should have generic drivers that will work with it. I'm assuming your laptop doesn't have a small, round, green PS2 socket here...if it does try a mouse that fits that.
