Well, things are moving on. My company has said they are happy for me to move from our HQ in Aberdeen and work from home in my new chosen location of York. Not only will I be with my new GF on a permanent basis, but perhaps more importantly I'll have access to a darn sight more choice in the way of coarse fishing ;D Anyway, I'll be moving some time in the next 2-3 months and was wondering if anyone can recommend some angling clubs to join in the York area. I'm not a match angler, and I'll be looking for a club that has good access to a variety of venues...river, canal, natural lake etc. I've been reading up on the venues section of the site and it looks like there's also a good selection of commercial fishing within an easy drive of York....not something we have up here in the wilds of NE Scotland!! Also, which tackle shops in York would you recommend? I'm down in a couple of weekends time and might be able to persuade the GF to do a tour of the local establishments Oooo....I'm getting all excited about my move now...can't wait!!

Leeds and Distict ASA springs to mind. See here: www.leedsdasa.co.uk/Enjoy Yorkshire. It's the best move I've ever made. Dave

Leeds ASA as Dave mentions and York DAA see www.communigate.co.uk/york/ydaa/index.phtmlTogether that covers a lot of the Nidd, Ouse, Wharfe, Swale, Ure, Derwent plus canals and lakes. As for Tackle Shops, York Tackle Shop (at Badger Hill) on the east as you enter York (just past the Large roundabout). They sell the Leeds and York books, match, general and speci gear. Very helpful too. John at York Carp (Poppleton Road on west of city) is good for Carp and barbel.

This is a bit deja vu for me ;D
I moved to York from Aberdeen just over two and half years ago Jeremy and it was the best move I ever made.
In terms of fishing, the clubs suggested will cover your requirements, you can't go wrong with YDAA, they have a good selection of waters.
On top of that there are plenty good fisherys near York that are easily accessible.
Tackle shop wise, again plenty, though they are a little spread out and the better ones are a little out the way.
I'll post back later with some links pin pointing thier locations if you require them.
The chaps on here were a great help with information and seeing me right when I moved here so you've made a good start.
Anything else you need to know, just ask.
Once you're settled I'll gladly take you fishing one day and you can tell me all about Aberdeen as I've not been back since I moved.
Oh and if you need any info on renting / buying in York and about areas give me a shout.

Jay, that's very kind of you....I may very well be in touch on the fishing trip front once I'm installed in York I've been up here in Aberdeen for almost 11 years, but have only recently started coarse fishing again after a good 15yr absence. My parents wanted to reclaim some space in their garage and shipped all my tackle up to me so I decided to start up again. As you probably know coarse venues are few and far between up here but I found one within a reasonable drive of the city. But the range of species is limited...roach, some cracking ide, perch and pike seem to be about it. I'm looking forward to getting stuck into some bream and tench fishing P.S. Just spotted that link to the North Yorkshire forums, and got myself registered....some good resources here for the imminent angler
