An interesting snippet of news in tonights local rag reads as follows.
"More than 60 people who fished without a licence paid £6,439 in fines and costs after being hauled before Yorkshire courts between August and October. The Environment Agency warned anglers to expect to be punished if they were caught."
Well done to the EA for bringing the wrong doers to task but why the paltry fines? Regardless of where they were fishing these people were poaching as well as breaking the law. At just over £100 per offender (not including costs) it hardly sends out a stark warning to others. I was under the impression licence dodgers faced fines going into thousands according to the blurb we see every year. How do they come up with the amount the defendant has to pay? Who gets the money? The courts (state) or the EA?

I'd heard they impound all your gear at waters edge and it's a minimum £1000 fine

It should be a minimum £1000 fine in my opinion.
It seems that in reality the fines are much less.

I agree Bluey ....why should we all go out of our way to make sure we have up to date licenses whilst these folk just blatantly disregard the law and anyone else. It really isn't that expensive....you can even buy a daily rod licence from the internet. Bawny ;D

It must be a common occurrence Bawny. Some people just never learn, or are prepared to take the risk. I'll be honest, I've had my licence checked just once so far. How many "so called licenceless anglers" are prepared to take the risk and fish without one thinking they will get away with it? It's a bit like driving a car without insurance. Many do it as they get away with it........until something happens. In short these people are cheating every licence buying angler by short changing the EA. I have not one bit of sympathy for those caught whatsoever and think they should all be landed with the maximum fine possible. The same goes for those driving vehicles without insurance as well!

....exactly! It boils down to one thing....you either abide by the law or you don't.... ok ok ok...you may think that someone who doesn't pay their car insurance or indeed a tv or rod licence is probably just a chancer and not a criminal but not in the eyes of the law. As a law abiding citizen I would like to see the maximum sentence / fine given as per the offence commited. Like you say Bluey they are cheating the EA and people like us. They are probably the very same anglers who leave old line and tins around on the bank. Bawny

All well and good saying make them pay the max fine (not that i dont think they shouldnt apy it)
but you are forgetting a fundemental thing and thats the state of this countries court system ..
how can some one who is convited of murder end up getting less than life...that is not right and as such until they get the system right and give out correct sentences for the crimes commited you will always get those that will try and stretch the envelope because whats the worst they are going to get,a tap on the wrist or small fine at worst (not a deterent at all) and if thety are really unlucky a custodial sentence where they can claim infringment of human rights (last weeks drug addicts a case) whilst being locked up.
they give up their rights when they are arrested END OF ....
JUST MY THOUGHTS
