Wrap your paste in cling film in a ball. Stick it in the fridge overnight if you plan to use it next day. Alternatively put it in the freezer. Remove from freezer the night before required, should be ok for use the following day.
I agree with Kev's comments Albert, it sounds to me like you made the paste a bit on the dry side mate. I think a drop more water (not much) would have given you a stiffer paste capable of staying on the hook.

I swear by ringers paste...put the paste in a bait bowl and add water to it bit by bit. Give it chance to soak in but dont over do it with water. If it doesn't stay on add a bit more water.

with the ringers paste there is a mark on the packet so i have been told for the right water level i have never use ringers paste before but im dying to try it the tackle shop doesn't sell it where i got. as for the hooks i use paste hooks what they have on them is like a little coil on them once the paste is on them they are like a hair rig. was you fishing on the pole because what i do on the pole is tie some elastic on my pole and then just place the line over then the knot in the elastic and it keeps it out of the water till you are ready to put it in the water
