I phoned beforehand to make sure no matches were booked onto this venue, I was told no fishing before 8am as there are caravans on site, the usual bans- no groundbait and barbless hooks only, so we arrived at around 7-45 and unloaded the car, had a walk around the venue only to see deck chairs and carp chairs sat on some of the pegs, its been only a week since I came home from Spain and it reminded me of towels on the sun loungers, all the best pegs were alread spoken for by the caravaners, not only that but some had rods set out with method feeders and a bucket of groundbait beside them!!!
It was the pegs furthest from the entrance that were available so we got set up there, I had a lovely swim, overhanging tree to the left and lily pads to the right, unfortunately I neglected to look up otherwise I would have seen an overhanging oak tree that made casting very difficult, the depth was a decent 6ft (made a change from the last venue- Brafferton at a paltry 8 inches!)
The weather was glorious, sun from the off, and after a few mishaps with the oak tree I finally got into the swing of things, the fishing was fairly slow to begin with , only a few small roach to maggot, a change to worm brought a better class of fish, a few small tench and a handful of small carp, all to worm, tried alternating with different baits but no luck, stuck with the worm for the majority of the day, the bites were steady but all with small stuff, had a couple of crack offs to a bigger fish which took me into the lily pads. Plenty of fish were topping later in the day, and the brother in law decided to have a go at floating bread around the other side of the lake, hooking into 4 carp for around 30lb, I needed no other cue and set up a controller float and joined him, for the last hour I fished floating crust and managed to get into an 8lb common carp, missing plenty of bitesalong the way, we would have stayed longer(it was 8pm by this time and I had already promised the wife I would be home by 8!) a nice way to finish off the day, a 10lb common carp saw a personal best for the brother in law, he was well chuffed.
