Fishabil is NOT usually what you would call a slow fishery, the shear numbers of large fish of a variety of species make sure of that usually. But every so often it will throw the odd wobbly, and this week was one of them. It was a very slow week all round, probably due the previous weeks Carp competition which saw all but a handful of swims fished really hard. So maybe I shouldn't have been all that shocked when out of 11 anglers there were only a few folk that had much of anything by Fishabil's standards. Mainly we had a bit of a hit at the start of the week, then tapering off by Wednesday onwards.
Nigel had a bunch of mid 30lb Mirrors plus a late 43 Mirror but that was a bit of an exception. Ok he had a few 20 - 30lb Sturgeon, and a 54 Cat, but that's not a lot by his standards.
The 2 English lads on the North bank had a good start with around a dozen Carp straight off, going to 36lb I think, but then it died right off for them.
One French guy, also on the North bank, who seemed to use the European supply of particles, had a beano for a while with both Carp and Cats, but that too seemed to drop off by the third or fourth day.
Anthony and Claire arrived midweek, setting up on the middle of the East bank, and had a great start both with 6 or 8 Carp over 35lb and Cats to just over the 100lb mark, but like the rest of us it tapered off after a couple of days.
I hope it improves for them as they are booked on for another 7 days yet!
That left two more French guys, (who had won a free trip courtesy of I think Carp Spirit tackle), and me plugging away on the Dam wall.
They had either fished the place before or had some fairly exact info about their swims, but it was to no avail as they were blanking mightily when we packed up on Sunday morning.
I'd chosen the Dam wall as its known to produce my Cats and Sturgeon. You may not get many from the middle swims but they usually tended to be the bigger fish.
However I had some very odd results, managing a bunch of Sturgeon all new p.b.'s on 22mm Halibut pellet. These came on my new Longbow DF's, (contrary to popular belief they can bend), the two bigger Sturgeon 46 and 47lb really gave them a working over to prove it. However I had only one Carp, (a 15lb Common), which fell to a lump of Bream dead bait fished o a 5/0 hook, on my 5lb tc Cat rods!
The Cat rods really did do the business for me though landing several more modest Cats, but one humongous Cat of 97lb, which was a new pb also.
I'm not sure what we are planning for next season, as, in addition to Fishabil, we had several long discussions about the river Soane, or any one of a bunch of French Carp venues.
Any and all suggestions, with the exception of Chantecoq, Orient, or Gigantica, would be welcome.
