Used to fish a few of the Bradford areas in the 1950s and early 60s. mainly Doe Park, Denholme.
Now revelling in barramundi fishing around Mackay. Err, retired for 15 years.
Cheers, Bobj.

Welcome to site, have you just come on to make us all jealous? Haha Not at all, mate. Used to love pike fishing in those far off days. Also used to like the trout at Leeming Res. I note that is now a 'fly only' reservoir. Maggots and garden worms in my day. Just a sample of barra fishing... Cheers, Bobj.

G'day mate, yes, googled Bradford fishing and West Yorkshire fishing forums.
Used to be a member of the Bfd AA over 50 years ago. Truth is, I was trying to remember a venue I went to, Doe Park, but I always knew it as 'Kitchimer'. As I lived in Thornton, it was an easy place to get to for a young lad.
Cheers, Bobj.

Nice mate, you got any more photos of fish from over there ? Here you go, mate, a spotty mackerel, 81 cm. She had just finished spawning, hence the 'thin' look. Caught off the rocks 1.3 km from where I live. Cheers, Bobj.

Cracking fish Bob. My younger brother lives out in Perth. Don't think he is into fishing, although I was a late starter. Didn't get into it until the legs went and I couldn't play footie anymore. Hope he gets into rod and line when he gets past it too! Might just have to brave the awfully long flight and pay him a visit. By the way, what happened to Rex Hunt? It was his piscatorial series, along with our own Matt Hayes & the Extremely hypnotic Passion for Angling programme that seduced me to take fishing up. That and I can't play golf.!!

Many thanks for the kind comments, mate. The bearded burbler, aka Rex Hunt had a couple of altercations with some tv 'moguls' and an altercation with a few members of the public. Being an ex cop, he thought he could still push lesser mortals around. Perth has excellent fishing off shore, (big samson fish, dhu fish) but not too good around the city beaches. Very limited freshwater fishing, a few redfin in Mundaring Dam and a few trout 250 km south, around Pemberton. The far north of WA is a fisho's paradise, be it in fresh, or salt water.

hi bobj, welcome to the site. im a Bradford lad myself, live in wibsey these days, but know Doe park pretty well and Hewenden res. spent 6 months in oz many year ago, stopped off to see an old mate from army in Perth.travelled over the nullabour plain on a coach from Perth to Melbourne...took two days. stopped off with a mate who i grew up with who i am still in touch with and stopped off in Sydney for a bit. travelled round a bit....got the t.shirt-sent the postcard-drank the beer and got a bit freindly with a sheila or two. even got round to a bit of fishing of the peir, cant remember what the place was called. it was when i was in Melbourne trecked down the great ocean road for a bit stopping off to cool down and fish. caught all sorts of weird and wonderfull species-travallian-dozen,s of toadie,s and a few type of fish that was poisonous.....it was a local who informed me of it been poisonous, as i went to unhook it.was going to get out on a boat, but never got round to it.my mate laughed when i told him about carp fishing in the u.k....they treat carp like rats.

Good one, walta. Been over the Nullabor 13 times and still wonder at the size of it.
In my day (1950s) Hewenden Res had a 'huge' pike that was supposed to have a couple of lbs of fishhooks dangling from its snout. I did hook up to a biggy but lost it 'cos I only had 10 lb line.
When are you coming out here again? Some good fish to be caught.
Cheers, Bobj.

hi bobj, got told that they filmed the mad max films out on the nullabor,25000 kilometres of open road. As for coming back out there, with the weather we are having here i would come out there tommorow----just need them 6 numbers on the lottery. Laughed when you spoke of the "huge" pike that was meant to inhabit hewenden. I seem to remember as a kid there was a huge pike in the reservoir on great horton road opposite the hare and hounds pub, also one in Harold park lake and one in Doe park. The size of these pike seemed to get biggger, as the tales of them were passed down. Eye witness accounts of 6 foot pike eating dogs and attacking swimmers.....must have been around the time when Jaws was on at the pictures lol. The old lad that used to live next door to, where i used to live, told me about how Doe park was full of stunted rudd that were infected with tapeworm. He passed his motorbike test in 1956 and transfered a few pike from hewenden into doe park, wrapped in wet cloths in his pannier bags on his motorbike. He said the pike survived and grew big on the infected rudd.Unfortunately theres no fishing legaly allowed on Doe park these days. All the bank wash from the boats and waves erroded the bank on the car park side. Bradford city a.a couldnt afford to pay for all the footpath and bank side re-built,so had to give up the lease. remember as a young un walking bank when matches were held on there, there seemed to be loads fishing.A far cry from the last few years before the club relinquished the fishing rights. It would seem that a lot of anglers preffered fishing commercial fisherie,s as apposed to the likes of doe park---harold park and royd,s hall dam.A bit of a blast from the past,a few places there that you may have fished before heading off to warmer venue,s.Im a member of hewenden a.a and love fishing up there, its a nice water and because its out of the way, your not bothered with idiots or rubbish.

Good one, mate. Really appreciate the update. Mad Max was filmed out from Melbourne, Mad Max 2 and 'Beyond Thunderdome' were filmed out from Broken Hill NSW. Used to fish the east side of Doe Park, especially around the little footbridge at the junction of the beck and the reservoir. It was a good place for redfin and roach, even got a few small pike to 12". Aah, Harold Park, was trying to remember that place; I fished it a few times but never caught anything over 5". It always seemed as though there was rotten vegetation in the pond. Get a trip out on here your next hols...We only have cyclones with winds to 160 mph; but that's rare, usually the winds are 100 mph...As a matter of fact, where I live, the building code states the houses must have a No.1 cyclone rating within 1 km of the coast. But then, I live only 250 yards from a beach overlooking some of the Whitsundays Islands. Cheers, Bobj.

An old workmate went out to oz for a holiday.while he was there he went to do some fishing.he said he was weary of crocadile,s,when he asked some bloke on the bank if there was any crocs in the river his reply was.......nah mate.........the bull sharks have eaten them all! take away the threat from sharks, crocs, blue ringed octopus, box jellyfish,7 species of poisonous snake and only god knows how many other things including plants that can do you serious harm its a nice place to go walkabout. does,nt richard branson have his own pad...island if memory serves me right up the whitsunday islands. he isnt your neighbour is he bobj.....hello richard just popped round to borrow a slab.

Love it, walta...Dunno about Dickie Branson, but George Harrison and a few other 'rich and famous' have properties on Hamilton Island, (only 80 km away as the tinny travels)
There are a few dangerous creatures in the outback, have actually trodden on a number of snakes and caught a few crocs on fishing line, but it's part of the deal if you want barramundi, or exotic fish; much like crossing a road, you get used to it and suddenly you have a huge bus bearing down on you!
There are 3 dams within a 2 hour drive, that hold barra to 1.4 metres (5 ft)and no dangerous beasties...well, if you discount the jetski drivers. Plenty of places that you can fish and hook up to huge trevally and barracuda and the like. Australia really has some mind blowing fishing.
