Fished the early tide up this morning without a hit - fair bit of weed being brought in which caused a few problems. Probably due to the windy weather of late Everything seemed quiet - even the birdlife was pretty scarce. Few gannets and not much else Ended up mostly trying surface lures just to avoid the weed but would rather have been able to fish some deeper divers. Still trying to get hold of some weedless 'Texas' jigs to try for such conditions Still nice to be back on the coast and did a bit of scouting for future trips. Came across a guy baitfishing who'd had a couple of smoothounds - not my cup of tea I must admit

Try hooking one Phil, you may alter your thoughts, quicker than a barbel on speed ,on heavier gear as well.

Fished the afternoon tide at Flamboro today No hits again but a lovely day to be by the sea. Plenty of action further out to sea and way beyond casting distance - lots of surface disturbance and diving birds so the fish are certainly about. Hopefully they'll start to come closer inshore soon Lots of birds about including: gannets, terns, guillemots, razorbills, puffins, oystercatchers, redshanks and several species of gull. I like to spend an hour or so fishing and then have a 15 minute break birdwatching - bit of relief for the aching shoulder On the down side put a hole through my waders which'll need a repair before my next trip

Make the most of it while you can, Phil. Story is that the cliffs from Bempton to Sewerby are to become an RSPB conservation area which means no angling. It's already started by not allowing unattended salmon nets. Filey Brigg will be next!

Yes - there's already no-go areas around Bempton and around Sewerby I just hope they don't go as far as to join up the bit in the middle I can probably see the reasoning as far as commercial fishing is concerned but to put it out of bounds to pleasure anglers is a bit far fetched - there can only be a few dozen guys who fish it anyway. I rarely, if ever, see another angler while I'm fishing

I think this is the thin edge of the wedge, DEFRA, EA, RSPB, RSPCA all hate anglers! We are talking over 10 miles of coastline that will be out of bounds to anglers!
Where next?

Are they banning the public as well? should be an interesting legal position if so, though correct me if my geography is out, i thought they banned the angling from the cliff tops, at Bempton, not the beaches either side?

Done a bit of research RSPB have a 'code of conduct' for the cliff tops at Bempton which bans fishing between 1st April - 30th September for a 1.4mile stretch. As far as I know you can still fish from the bottom of the cliffs if you can get access - which ain't easy. Natural England have recently instigated an experimental NTZ(no take zone) between Sewerby Steps and Danes Dyke. This means no fishing, bait collecting, crabbing etc - nothing to be taken away at all. Hopefully this will not be extended Also turned up this which is probably even more worrying www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk/subtidal-commercial-bass-fishery-planned-for-flamborough-area

Noticed there was a guy named Phil Arnott involved in the discussions for the NTZ - maybe the same fellah who's just written a book on shore fishing There's also a YF member called the same

Fished the morning tide today. Fairly calm sea with a fair bit of troublesome weed at the top of the tide Probably had 3 hits - only one connected and then for only about 5 secs. All on shallow diving yo-zuris Bit of activity on the bird front and a big shoal of sandeels appeared directly in front of me at one point - alas without any bass preying on them. In Wales I've had this happen with the bass herding them inshore and attacking. Caught a few by dropping lures directly in front of them Anyway still no Yorkshire bass for me but I'm confident its only a matter of time The experts say really big bass often throw the lure fairly quickly so maybe I had a good 'un after all

Have you tried the beach between Primrose Valley and Hunmanby Gap? Said to be a Bass hot-spot, I know that the salmon netters often get Bass in their nets, a couple of years ago, a 13 pounder was netted just off the Coble Landing, local fish merchant gave him less than a fiver for it!
We have had whiting hooks straightened when flattie bashing of the sea wall at Filey. Also had several Bass about size, bait fishing. They always go back, of course!
They are there..............

Have you tried fishing at Reighton Gap,bottom of the old road way that used to lead to Toulson's sand and gravel plant some years ago.I know someone who fishes there and he says fish about 1hr before high tide and back he has had some good bass down there. Re fishing Bemton top Filey Brigg Angelers fish this in winter on there winter fishing matches ,used to fish there myself some years ago,n bit to long in the tooth now to trail up there in the cold. there is also a place under the cliffs called the submarine ( a first world war one sub was been towed when it came adrift and finished under the cliffs) a very long walk over fields and down the cliffs about 2 miles. Hpoe this helps.

Spent last week in Wales and was lucky to have glorious weather and calm seas Had half a dozen bass in as many sessions to 5lb 5oz from the shore and about 15 fish on a boat trip. The biggest at 7lb+ One of the best boat sessions ever with fabulous scenery where the mountains come down to the sea and dolphins a constant companion - am seriously considering upping sticks and moving there Still not managed one from the Yorkshire coast but have some new gear to fish weedless soft plastics and get some casting distance too

Just a note to say I finally cracked it 3 weeks ago - 2x3 pounders and lost a much bigger fish. Have teamed up with a guy I met at Flamboro and he's given me a wealth of info on tides, lures, methods etc for which I am eternally grateful Hopefully I'll be able to catch a bit more regularly now Still, it'll all be a bit tame compared to the 24pound striper I had last week

24lb Striper sounds like a handful, I would love them over here Yes, so do I Aidey. The yanks have introduced them to the Pacific north west and they're doing very well by all accounts. Probably do well in European waters too but would almost certainly decimate the smaller european sea bass. Still we can hope This is the 24 - caught on a lure from the shore. Also had half a dozen in the teens and innumerable smaller fish Biggest of the holiday was this beast from a boat - not on a lure In a bit of a contrast - this is my first yorkshire bass Oh Well - back across the pond in September. Rubbing my hands already

I managed a couple of short sessions throwing lures around in Cornwall but didn't get a touch. To be fair I wasn't really prepared and had to use my old Piking lures and a few old spinners and never quite managed to hit the tide at the right time. Hopefully I'll be back down again next year and will have more of an idea where to head.
My daughter did manage a bucket full of crabs one evening in the harbour though so one of us bagged up!

Heading west again Graham. New Haven Connecticut to be precise TBH I'd rather catch 10lb stripers on a lure from the shore than a forty on bait from a boat. The yanks aren't great on catch and release either which bothers me Went back to Flamboro today but no hits - loads of weed and a murky sea Best news is I'm buying a rib - 3.2m with a 15hp mariner so I'll be able to track the bass even when there further out to sea and hopefully improve my catch rates

They grow up all too quickly I have a bit more of an idea for next year and hopefully will be a bit more organised too! I don't think the weather helped either, the sea was very calm and it was very bright during the day, can't really complain too much at that though! The rockpooling more than made up for not catching anything else

I could name a hundred which isn't really of much use
Best thing I can suggest is to visit a tackle shop called Mr Fish in St Helier when you arrive - its run by a great guy called Mick Ward who's one of the founders of a lure fishing forum I contribute to.
Mick is a mad keen lure fisherman and can suggest and sell you a couple or three that won't break the bank. He'll probably put you on to some of the marks that have been producing too
