Yes the car park is definitely locked up at night, and bivvying up is bookable. I suggest this as there are only a few bivvy pegs so its worthwhile giving the bailiff a ring to check they are not all taken. What I would also suggest is going set up for a day fishing trip until the car park gates are locked, then shifting to one of the bivvy pegs for the night. Set your alarm clock for 6.00am pull down your gear, and head back for the day pegs again, as soon as you can. However fair warning, if the fish are even remotely on form and co-operating, you will be very tired after a days fishing, dog tired by midnight-ish, and on your hands and knees by the next morning. Bearing in mind at this time of year you can be looking at between 10 and 30 double figure (and more) fish in a 24hour session from some of the best pegs. Then you still have to drive home safely! Thats why we were thinking about booking day pegs and also booking a local b+b for the 2 nights to give us some rest hopefully!! Were looking at booking for next year now seen and read alot about drayton so looking forward to the trip already!!

Right, get you Leetommo. OK to get local B& B's do a search for Tourist information offices around Daventry, (or any other town you are going to) and either email or ring them. They usually have a list of B&B's that are good. Having usually been vetted by someone with a view to promoting the local tourist trade, since they want folk to keep coming back. I recommend this approach as I haven't had a dud from any of the ones I have been referred to, even in other countries. BOF

You cant book day pegs but Mark the bailiff will let you know what pegs will be free for a couple of days, as Bof says the bivvy pegs are limited, if I went again overnight I would probably just pay for the day and sleep in the car park overnight, wouldn't try it on a first trip but have been before and the bailiff knows us and was amazed when he sent his lads to clear the pegs when we were leaving and they came back with empty black bags and he was told that they were cleaner than when we arrived but that may be a reflection on the normal anglers that fish there. You are not locked in at night it is just the entry gate that is locked, the exit gate is still open, in fact I know of one very well respected YF mod who was told in old fashioned anglo saxon to tun round and exit after coming in the wrong gate, ;D. No its my memory, he was just told to OFF, lol BOF. Will be going down mob handed next april at the latest, but will get a few snide trips in between now and then, lol, my son lives in Daventry, the best thing his mother ever did since we split up was moving to there . My face was crimson, I can tell you ! As Paul says, I had come in the sailing club gate and turned left the wrong way up the one way road along the dam wall. Just as far away from the correct entrance and our intended pegs as could be found. Be warned this does absolutely nothing for Mark's sense of humour. ;D My obvious confusion and abject appologies (apparently I do a good grovel), had him relent on the "bog off" instruction, and I eventually got sorted with the right entrance and place to park. Please learn from my error and find the right entrance gate! BOF

Went down to Daventry to pick up my lad on Sunday and the place was very busy, dropping him back off early Saturday so may have to put a rod in the back of the car and have a few hours. Angie the bailiffs wife did say last time we were down that the winter fishing is one of the best kept secrets going, suppose they get used to all that feed going in so they are continually looking for it plus they do have a good bit of depth so the temperatures wont have such an effect as they would on shallower waters. Hope that helps.
Paul.

Went down saturday but due to cold snap most of the lake was frozen, had a good chat to Mark the bailiff and plenty of fish are still coming out. Will be having a trip down again for a couple of nights when the weather warms up a little. Nearest town is Daventry, the place is really easy to find from the M1.

Owt catches, more or less anyway. But if you are just going for the day, why not try Float fishing? It will be a real change for most of us at least. BOF

Good thinking Phil, the old boy who is always fishing on the dam with a pin and split-cane rod always seems to do well on float fished prawns.

Prawns, Bread, Maggots, Worms what have you, Chris's (?) used them all to good effect. By the way the new Mk 4 Carp rod he's using is the one I sold him last year. I was sorry to see it go, but he is obviously dedicated to that style of Carping, so at least it will be put to good use. BOF

A quick word with the bailiff when you book on, will get you set up with more info than you can cope with. He's round several times a day, (despite the walk), so he's bang up to date with everything. Top man imop. BOF
