Having come back from a week at the coast i thought I'd do a couple of reviews on the venues we managed to fish.
Mill Road is just outside the village of Addlethorpe. It consists of 2 lakes the Horse Shoe and Square. The venue has a good size carpark, shop and has easy access to each lake but for disabled anglers you would be better fishing the horseshoe which is no more than 10meters from the carpark. It also has a polish women and her rottweiler running it but more on that later.
The venue is ope from 6am till dusk and charge £5 adults and 4£4 for kids.
Son of and I fished this venue twice. On the first attempt we started on the Square lake which we were told holds Carp to 10lbs and all the other culprits you would normally expect including fan tails. One word of warning here. The weather was great so being the professional fisher person I am I went in shorts and flip flops. I know before you all start but well. Lets say the bank on the far side of the lake where we had chosen to fish was a touch slippy and me doing my best torvil and dean nearly ended up in the drink twice. Even funnier were the 3 guys who fished to the right of use who managed to perfect synchronized head over heals. I don't think they appreciated my titters. even more so when I got ragged into his swim before losing a fish.
Right the fishing. Actually was very slow in 2 hours we only manged 3 fish. We tried everything from depth to shallow. Tight in to far out and a number of other ways. i id manage to bag a fan tail which was a first. Only about 1.2lbs but very nice fish.
We moved to the horse shoe lake and fished next to a big over hanging tree. Almost first cast son of managed to bag a PB mirror of about 10lb. Nice fish good fight. He also managed a number of others up to that which was good fishing. As for me well I fished badly. You know the type of day you can't quite put your finger on it but it doesn't go well. For the first 2 hours all I caught much to my sons delight was a chuffing gold fish(Golden orfe) another first but boy did I get it in the neck. As we got to the last cast stage. I went really shallow just to pick up some silvers well wallop goes the float and over goes the rod. Now what I haven't told you is that We had only taken waggler rods with 3lb line and fished with size 12 hooks to 5lb. No matter how much I tried this fish continued to swim in circle at the same depth for the next 10mins. Helpful comments from son of like your rods gonna break and you'll lose it don't help when your on a panic but lets say a carp in the region of 13lbs looks fantastic in the net and made him shut his gob.
On Day two we arrived at 6am and fished the same spots on the horseshoe lake. Having had a look at the lake and the number of fish rising I decided to float fish big lumps of bread. Having never really tried this before it was a new experience. First cast. Looked away for a second and you know that moment when you look back and can't pick the bait well. Strike. Only problem was this fish was having none of it and set of like a torpedo in the general direction of away. The bit of the lake we was fishing was about 45 meters long. At 35 meters and still going I thought the fish was going out the car park. I'm also glad there was no one else there cos I was making a right dillon of myself being ragged all over the lke just for the fun of it. After a good 5 mins of fruity language and sweat I manged to turn the fish and get some line back and this was the only glimpsed I got. I couldn't even begin to guess at the size but it was bigger that the previous one. Well lets say that disappointment is always hard to take. much to sons of amusement and the line parted company. But good fun all the same. 5 mins later same happened this type managed to land another 10lb plus fish. This is one venue that we both enjoyed and was really good to fish. We both beat our PBs the fish were in excellent condition and it's a very well run and looked after venue. Well worth a visit.
Now to the polish women. She patrolled and I mean patrolled the lakes with dog in tow. It looked like it could eat you given half a chance. They were both a bit fierce but actually very helpful. The shop does pellet bates and also food which helps.
I had a wander round look at what other people were doing and people were catching on every method you could think of. With all sorts of baits.
Hope this helps and defiantly worth a go.
