as the rugby league world cup approaches and the squads have been announced i had to laugh at some of the selections and player defections.the best one has to be (australian ex state of origin) hooker robbie farrah playing for the lebanon.it's my guess he qualifies through his great grandmother's pet poodle went for a slash on the gazza strip 50 years or so ago.then we have the best no 13 in the nrl (jason taumalolo) turning his back on new zealand and joining the tonga bandwagon as has andrew fifita.before this thing has even started i'm going for a for an australia v england final ( even though this doylem bennet is in charge).new zealand and tonga probably being the two beaten semi finalists depending on how the draw pans put. i love the game but the whole concept is turning into a farce. thoughts please. steve.

Agree Chubchaser. Bennett has done the same in selecting Heighington too. Agree with Schoey - it's a double whammy. He is an Aussie and an Aussie who isn't good enough to play for England! The Kangaroo's have already got the World Cup in the bag. And these lads prioritise the State of Origin above anything else so they will probably only have to play at 50% to win it. Like a lot of fans, I won't bother tuning in to watch any matches until the semi's.

Doesn't say much for any of the English coaches that an Australian gets paid megabucks for coaching a team that wasn't good enough to get past round 1 in the Four Nations Cup...

First game was excellent! The English team really played a good game and pressured the Australians all game, instead of hanging their heads when the Australian team nudged ahead.

Just got in from work. Shower, tea and then settling down to watch the game with a couple of tinnies. Not too fussed about the result - didn't expect to win, or to be that close to be honest. After this game it will be the semi's when I next tune in. Only watching this one to see Slater, Smith, Gagai, et al. Awesome rugby league players.

overall a decent showing from the england team.the aussies looked rusty and would have lost against a more clinical team.the halves have to be better against the better teams.george williams is another option if they dont.i thought magillvary was excellent and hall played well also.i'd like to see mark percival at left centre and john bateman at loose now sam burgess is out for a few weeks.i'd put alex walmsley on bench instead of heighington also.oloughlin was poor and spent too much time pratting about at the play the ball and as captain should know better.we should reach the semis but will have to be a lot better when we do.

s py performance from england today but job done and 2 points in the bag.there's no doubt whatsoever we'll beat france next week but the kicking game needs to be addressed and quickly.i'd be tempted to put george williams in for gale and see how he goes.once again the left centre position is a talking point as discussed in the studio by robbie paul kevin sinfield and jonathan davies.Mark percival should be in there and i think anyone can see that( saints best player this season by a mile).bateman at second row and currie on the bench when slamming sam is back for the semis. thoughts please.

well well well.what a superb performance by the fijians this morning.should have won by a bigger margin against a very average new zealand side.also spare a thought for the lebanese who had a real dig at the tongans and made todays quarter finals worth watching. shame yesterdays was a blow out but these fijians will have a real crack at the aussies next weekend and our boys should win tomorrow and face the tongans in the other semi final.

Women's rugby league!?? Whatever next? Looks like all is going to plan with regards Australia vs England final. Will.be watching from next weekend. Tonga will be a toughie - but we should have too much quality and experience to beat them. We will be coming home as runners up, as expected.

Yeah. Okay, Bobj. Maybe your right. Women playing traditional mens sports just doesn't sit right with me though. Having said all that I have been out with a few gals that could be mistaken for a prop forward. 😉

"I have been out with a few gals that could be mistaken for a prop forward.
That explains the lack of 'tackling power' in the England forwards...

I thought that Fiji would have put up a better show at the semi final...They were completely outclassed, which is odd because their game against NZ was a thriller.
Today, England vs Tonga...

yes i thought fiji would have put in a better performance than that.didn't watch the 2nd half because i knew the aussies would put 50 on them.hard fought win for the england boys today.a bit lucky in the end as i thought elliot whitehead stripped the ball out of fifitas hand.but a win is a win and now we're in the final.moving gareth widdop to fullback has been a masterstroke and for once clown bennet has done something right.looking forward to next week now. COME ON ENGLAND

yes well done england, told you widdup was world class and i always knew brown was liked by bennet but he is injury prone and he was out of form realy but he is class and beside being knocked out hes been injury free fingers crossed, hodgson injury a worry now as he is so versatile but id still pick roby first with josh on the bench, as ive said before gale is good super league standard but hes not international class, he talks the talk but does he walk the walk, i feel hes been englands weakest player and the aussies will target him, still hope we can cause an upset and they can become legends just like the team of 1970 which graces the walls of many hull pubs with roger millward my hero looking proud and it was roger who turned things around in the second test to gain great britains legendary series win, i can dream that we can win it cant i.

With news of the England team and replacements announced today it seems that England will have one world cup winner on the pitch - the Aussie Heighington! What a disgraceful decision by his mate Bennett. CH is not English and definitely not good enough to play for either side.

well after that narrow defeat i must say i was impressed by the effort of the players today.but i'm afraid it was a case of same old same old as regards to breaking the australian defence down.how many times in the past have we blown chances when in good field position?the aussies looked relieved at the final whistle and out on their feet as they're not usually pushed as hard as that.On the plus side i thought widdop at full back was a good decision in the end and gale looked better at first receiver and put some good kicks in.would like to see george williams in the halves as the lad is one for the future if he carries on performing the way he has for wigan.I'd like to see mark percival at left centre and john bateman in the backrow next time as he makes up for a lack of size with a cracking engine and plays with grit and determination.I'd also start alex walmsley and have chris hill on the bench with ben currie.apart from a daft 7 mins against tonga we've defended resolutely so that's another plus going forward.never mind lads maybe next time but one thing is for sure that gap between the aussies and ourselves is nowhere near as big as a lot of people think.

agree with a fair bit steve said but heres my take. firstly annoyed with tony smiths statement that the score flattered england, what a load of tosh as steve said the aussies were gasping and england deserved to win, im so proud of them.watkins was so unlucky with that ankle tap stopping the try brings me to this subject and i know the rfl talked about trying to get them out of the game and i when i played i saw so many injuries after a player had been ankle tapped including myself with a visit to hull royal infirmary once when i fell awkward, but that was more years ago than i care to remember. as for the future team ok gale was better and did a couple of good kicks but he was useless earlier in the tournament, i dont think hes international class, agree that williams is the future who i would partner with widdop and put lomax at full back as i believe in him, think it was a mistake playing bateman at centre cause he doesnt know when to pass, but i do think hes class and id play him 2nd row, i get why bennett picked him at centre though cause he likes big sides, and if theres a fight you want bateman in your side as i like his agression. the forwards i have always thought that tom burgess is a liability with his ball losing and he gives penalties away, so id give liam watts a go now on the bench as i think that hes got more than scott taylor although it pains me as im a rovers fan lol, i do like currie as he can play almost anywhere, and i was disapointed with browns performance but hes 33 now so its williams turn for the future.lastly i do worry about england teams for the future as there doesnt seem to be any class half backs coming through and maybe super league clubs always importing aussies etc in these positions isnt helping, just a thought

A good, solid game and congratulations to the Australian team. Best player on each side, for my money were Cameron Smith for Australia and Sam Burgess for England. All in all, a damn good game. How about praising Bennett for giving the England team some tikker?
