Something should be done about it, I have only been fishing the river for the last 5yrs and it seems to me that there are less and less people fishing these days as i think its putting other anglers off.

Did you see the details of the planned scheme for the river Hull from tickton to Hull? If It did ever happen do you think they would allow fishing from there shiny new concrete wharfs probably not on your life. You are probably better off with the mud and the seals Shaun till they munch there way through the remaining fish.

Haha I have also had a seal encounter on the tidal ouse it seemed to be stalking me and when it surfaced about 10 feet away from me, exit was the order of the day indeed....They are a lot bigger than I thought

You will always get some people that will say arn't they cute, leave them alone as a ex-commercial fisherman i've seen seals for years out at sea and seen the damage they do, when we use to net for cod seals would come up to the nets nip fish off by the gills and just play with it not eat it. I just think its about time something was done which ever way people think.

A few years ago there were a number of seals in the river Esk ambushing the salmon that were running...and they were shot...I believe it was an illegal cull.

Now you can shoot the rat's, i Have permission to shoot them at a site in Goole and some of them are like small dogs. Mind they dont get up after a dose of lead. Don't know if it would help to bait up a couple of swims then if your disturbed in one you could move to one of your others, the seals are asociating their food with anglers . daz

Hi all
It makes me incredibly sad to say, I fished the tidal Hull for the last time on Monday. So sad to see the (re)demise of the river.
After so many years, it seemed, a few years ago, that the river was, for the first time in a generation, becoming a viable venue again. I have personally caught many many Barbel, Roach, Perch, Chub, Bream, Dace etc from several stretches of the tidal ranging from Hempholme weirpool right down to Dunswell.
Over the last few years I have been less and less inclined to fish the tidal due to the unrelenting pressure from several things. I see these as being mainly, (and this is only my personal opinion of the situation) seals, otters, cormorants and illegal removal of fish by certain anglers. I'm not of the school of thought adopted by some that the river is, effectively, devoid of fish. Good catches from some areas are witness to the contrary. However, due to the pressures upon this river, I can't justify using my very limited fishing time to pursue the fish in the tidal. Such a great shame as, from a selfish point of view, this is by far the most accessible river fishery for me (I live near the university in Hull).
Lately I've been driving the extra miles to fish above the weir (although this area is not without its issues due to cormorant predation, otters and illegal fish removal), the Derwent and the Ouse.
As I said earlier, it's such a shame but I certainly don't have any solutions but to move elsewhere! It makes me so angry to see our little river so diminished but I don't know what else to do!
I'm off to the Derwent, right bank below Stamford tomorrow (YDAA water). Driving nearly 40 miles to fish the stick all day when I feel I should be able to do so on my own doorstep!

Hi Misterlewis. Its a shame to here that but i no the feeling when you have a fishery on you doorstep and you have to travel elsewhere and i think you are not alone on that one it seems a lot of people have stopped fishing the river for various reasons. Hope the fishing goes well for where ever you go.
