Today while fishing the Trent I suspected people were poaching on the far bank. With the magical power of 3G I managed to locate the Envirnoment Agency phone number and reported my concerns.
I would like to know what happens next. The guy I spoke to just said "I'll raise it with the local team and if a bailif is about he'll investigate."
If a bailiff is about? I was wondering if the EA employ Bailiffs on a on "call basis" as it was 7pm when I reported it. If that is case then surely it's not a case of "if" but a case of when.
Does that make sense?

You don't tell us what made you suspect them of "poaching" or how much of that you conveyed to the EA guy? If it was THEFT of fish (aka poaching) as opposed to illegal fishing (using rods without licences or using illegal methods, nets or whatever) that may not be down to the EA to pursue. It's the fish owner who needs to pursue them for theft, and not the EA. Anyway, from the chat with the bailiff guy who checked me last week, they're covering big areas and have to target their resources. He said they get lots of calls to what turn out to be "wild goose (not fish!) chases, but they do share all the info they get from anglers to build up a good idea of what places to pay particular attention to, so well done for reportig your suspicions.

Perhaps poaching was not the right word. They were fishing without the use of rod and line and using traps.
Nice to know the info does get shared tho.

Was curious about poaching from a river. Are there rules about removing fish from rivers or is it that you must have a license?

Yep, Angellus, some new laws came in about a year ago restricting removal of fish. I know that just having a licence doesn't permit you to remove any fish from any fresh water without the owner's permission. I'm not sure what the law is for I never remove fish so haven't bothered checking them out. I'll bet they're on the EA website though.

It's a joke. There's no wonder some folk take what they want from the river.
