Depends on the bit of "river" you are going to, and what you are fishing for 123tomhag. Part of the river is dammed and resembles nothing more than a vast lake, such as where I fished up near Riba-Roja. There it is home to some big Cats and beer keg shaped Carp, (Tip, take a walk along the top of the dam wall and have a look down to the margins. Depending on the time of year and the water levels you could be in for a real surprise), its also home to some nice Black Bass, if you are into lure fishing at all. Below the dam the river is "normal", sometimes quite fast flowing, but can be very weedy in places, also access is not at all straight forward if you do not speak good Spanish. GOOD LUCK! BOF

i'm guessing a big bit of oily squid hooked direct on the hook and a couple of monster sized hallibut pellets hanging off hair rig will be the way forward for the cats...seems to be the method from what (little ) i know of the tactics out there.

Size 2 and 4 hooks, any stiff link material you are happy with, 3-4oz zip leads. Use a leader such as 30lb whiplash, hook lengths approx 12 - 18 inch long with very long hairs. Look for the fish and cast to them, if you don't see fish then move!!!
