Well, I've just received a phonecall from our very own woodchucker, to say that he's just had a 35lb 8oz from cromwell lake. Pike? Nahh.... He's a secret carp angler really and it's a carp that has tipped his scales to that magical figure only hours ago. Many congratulations on a super, super fish from me mate, and i'm looking forward to seeing all these tarty photos of the fish. Top Angling, Dan

I was amazed..... and flattered that he chose to ring and tell me ... Mind you he probably rang every one in his phonebook he'll have got that excited. It's brilliant when it all comes together mate. I was the same when i had that common from the 'club' water . I'm after a new PB tomorrow though from the 'other' club water.... or my third ever 20. Will look forward to seeing the pics when i get in from fishing tomorrow night. Dan

I arrived at Cromwell early on Friday after to meet up with the lads for another social, this was our largest social so far with lots of new faces which is always nice to see, I knew in my mind which pegs that I would like to fish (Willows and A1 point) the way we picked a number out of a hat then no1 picked there peg no2 then picked there peg I was worried that I would end at the back of the lot but I was chuffed when I picked no2. I picked willows because the wind was howling across the lake from over my shoulder and I knew although it goes against everything you are taught but I was using a bait boat and I fancied a weekend without the wind blowing in my face. First of all Daz and Stotty gave me a masterclass in using the marker float which helped pin point some areas in my swim that had small clear patches in the weed which is very thick on Cromwell. I have been using Maple and Lobster baits from The Bait Kitchen for a good few months now and they have worked on nearly every venue so I stuck using there pop ups fished over a partimix and matching M&L pellets, the rigs are simple, the weed is dying back and is black in color so I used Mantis Back braid combi rigs with an inch stripped back and a Nash 30+ (You could not make it up) hook with are camo green. I bait boated the baits out to the right of my swim and then sat on my hands. The first day was pretty quiet but I did see a few fish jumping to the left of my swim but not near my baits, at tea time we all had a curry which was spot on cheers Stotty, unlike most I went back to my swim to get the rigs out before dark. while reeling the marker float in for the first time I was nailed by a pike which bit me off, sorry about that Daz, but it also meant that I was fishing blind so I guessed where I had the baits before and out they went. It was a nice night which was uneventful apart from a rat that took a liking to my spilt pellets. 3am and I had a rattle on my left hand rod that led to nothing, then at 5.10am I had a take in my right hand rod, my heart was racing knowing that it could have been one of Cromwells monsters but it was a tench of 5lb 12oz, a new pb all the same and a proof that fish were in my swim. The rods went back out after the tench and I had a spot of breakfast, at 9am I had another run on the left hand rod and the heart was in the mouth again, the fish pulled back a little as it tried to get into the weed but it then came in pretty easily, it went 13lbs, I was gutted, I knew I was fishing for one or two takes and a 13lber was not a big fish for Cromwell. The bait went back out to near the same spot off to the right of my swim and I sat back and waited. At 11.50am I had an single toner on the right hand rod again my heart was pounding, as I lifted into the take I knew it was a good fish as I struggled to move it, it seemed like it was trying to bury itself in the weed but I put the 3lb X-Flites to full test and managed to keep the fish out of the weed, the fish slowly plodded about about 90yards out and slowly came towards my far right hand side which was a bit of a worry as I had a bay to my right and I didn't want it to get in, so after applying side strain the fish darted for a bush to my right a couple of times but I then saw it and the heart skipped a beat, my mate Ian came to do the netting and I had it over then net on the second attempt, I dropped the rod on the rest and walked over to see the fish, it was huge, It was a known fish called Brownie and went 35lb 8oz I was over the moon, hours of fishing, tying rigs, putting a game plan together and it had worked. Daz came and weighed the fish as I was shaking like a jelly he also took some amazing pictures that I will treasure forever. After what seemed like a thousand phone calls to the lads I put another bait on the rig and shipped it out to the same sort of area. My next take came at about 3 hors after a cracking Chinese and was my left hand rod, it was another tench and went 5lb 4oz, not a monster but another fish. The bait went back out in the dark and I went to bed, the night was quiet with no action. On Sunday morning I was up about 6am and had a spot of breakfast, I was in two minds about bringing all the baits in and re freshing them but I just left them out, but then I noticed a large fish turning over the baited areas, so I catapulted some loose baits out which the fish seemed to move straight onto. It was coming upto 10am and we had to be off for 12 so I started to pack everything away just leaving the rods out. I was just waiting for my groundsheet to dry when I had a single beep on the right hand rod, I looked over at the rod and slowly walked towards it went it screamed away at an alarming rate, I bent straight into the fish and it was grinding n the weed but I made a couple of inches so I wound down and bent back into the fish to get its head up and it moved, it felt heavier than the 35lber so I took it slowly, the fight was just like reeling a bag of spuds in at it came straight to the net, it was another biggy and had never been caught before, he went 30lb 5oz and I named him Big Ron after my dad who is seriously ill with cancer. That was it my rods came straight in as I was mentally drained after what had happened over the last couple of days. I would like to thank all the lads who attended the social and for all the kind words that I have received since the captures. Just shows that sometimes it all just falls into place.
