Hello! Lately i've been trying to save money here and there (I am a student, just about to get my own car so i can go fishing more often ) I've been reading up on how to collect Lobworms seen as i was spending quite a lot for ones from the tackle shop. Last night, after light drizzle all day i went into the garden, freshly cut lawns, and a rabbit area where the grass is always short. It was about half past 10 when i went out and it had just gone dark. I searched for lobworms, supposedly on the surface in great numbers but i could not find any. After ten minutes i gave up and returned inside, on the way inside i noticed one Lobworm coming out of a thin border of gravel round the front of the house which is mainly paved. I spotted him, snook up on him and grabbed him. The age/woqzjvl0d/] [/url] shot straight through my fingers into its hole hahaha. This morning i awoke to see a blackbird pulling up a great big worm from the lawn. Typical haha. Anyway, last nights search failed. It had been drizzling all day but the ground was not overly wet. Could this be why there were no worms? Should i wait longer before heading out? , it was half ten when i went out last night. As you may know the weather in Yorkshire is to be rainy for the next few days and the temperature has dropped. What do you think the chances are that the lobworms will come up? Im going to go out again tonight, a little later and i may fill up a couple of watering cans and give the lawn a good soaking a few ours before i go out. ( I also tried this morning putting washing up liquid in some water and putting that on an area of grass. It brought 2 little tiny worms up who were clearly irritated by the soap but no Lobworms. Is this because it was morning? Should this be done in the dark as well? ) Hope someone can help me out here. I may be able to catch a few fish but so far these worms are proving elusive!

I always go to my local cricket ground for worms The park near me also has a huge field and that's good too. At least an hour or more after dark usually does it for me but as soon as the light starts to fade if it's wet enough they show. If there has been a few people walking around before dark they are slow to come to the surface though. I've not had much of a back garden /lawn until recently but some water with washing up liquid works great if I only want a few for hook bait, I've never really given it much of a chance though so it could be my own fault for not getting many.

*Update* Just returned from trying to gather a few worms. Not a single worm on the lawn, I'm confident I'm not scaring them away, I'm wearing beach shoes. Spotted three and captured one lobworm from the gravel border, will bring soapy water next time to get them out. I'm at a loss as to why there's none on my lawn. It was probably an hour after dark, been raining off and on all day and was still raining when I went out, its the middle of summer, is it just too cold? Should I wait till a proper summer storm? Any help will be appreciated, who knew catching worms would be harder than catching the fish!

Are you doing the worm dance and singing the worm song. Just wear yer boxers and a pair o wellies and a headlight on yer head and sing a song at top of your voice. If you don't get any at least your neighbours will hav a laugh or hav you arrested

Your lawn must just not be a good place for them.....I don't seem to get any on my lawn but can usually catch a few on the more bear soil under the hedges...if you really want to get some go to local park or golf coarse etc....they seem to like bear soil near short grass rose garden on my park is best place....there like magic mushrooms once you find one youl find loads

Suggsy - Thanks for your advice, i knew i was doing something wrong Danpy - I think i will try further afield then, tried immitating a mole with the fork vibrations this morning and used soap water, still no worms. Must be the ground, i know that under the lawn is a lot of clay opposed to soil, perhaps this is why. Jessthefish - I know where temple newsham is but i have no means of getting there until i get my car, well not at night time! Im going to work the gravel borders with soap water tonight and take a walk down the road.

Thanks for that video Beauregard. Rather comic and a little cringey. I wonder what happens to the all the worms after the event? An angler could perhaps take them?

If the fork in the ground doesn't work then I can assure you there are no worms in your garden Stick it in right up to the hilt and start gently waggling it backwards and forwards about 6 inch either way. If you manage to hit a bit of stone or something and it grates on the fork all the better. Like fishing , keep moving around the lawn until you find the worms. They sometimes pop out that quick you can't keep up with em. As young uns we used to go on the central reservation from JT Rodgers down to the Melbourne pub with head torches on and we used to get literally hundreds of BIG lobby's in a couple of hours. Pike at Methley used to love 4 big lobby's on a size 4 hook . . . Ah the good old days eh

Rushy - Hahaha. Ive just been and tried with the fork in various places with in the garden, 2 little worms came up so the fork method obviously does work but no lobs. Ive layed some old cardboard down on some soil areas and put a rock over it, poured a load of water over it and going to see if i can get any lobs from there in a few days.
Ive also pre watered the gravel borders where ive had most luck finding lobs, trouble is the border is only 2meters long and about 4 inch wide.
I will see how tonight goes but i think i'll have to look further a field. ( Friday night might give better success, meant to rain and be a few degrees warmer.

Hi I use steradent tablets, the ones you use for cleaning dentures, just put a couple in water and let them dissolve then put the water on the lawn or soil, and then wait for them to pop up.
believe me this does work.

Any joy yet? You might be better off having a look around them. I have a look over the last couple of nights and there were thousands on the cricket field near me. I have not tried the charming methods They all seemed a little "out there" to me and I would feel a bit crazy doing it to be honest. BUT one day curiosity will get the better of me!

I can't remember where I saw it (possibly on youtube),a guy built an electronic worm collector. It comprised a number of electrodes he constructed and connected them together. This was then connected to a power source. The worms must be averse to the current as he just picked them off the surface.

Better than any chemical treatment methods which can affect the long term storage of any worms collected. One thing about picking worms off lawns etc, it is best done around 11 - 12pm when the worms are fully out of their holes. But expect the long arms of the law to treat your activities at those hours with great suspicion. BOF

Hey all. Thanks for all your replies.
I can only conclude that my lawn is worm free. I went out 3 nights in a row, raining on and off all day. I went out at 10:30, and twice at 11pm. Not a single one on any of my lawns. The only place i found some, (2 or 3), was in the gravel border. I know there to be plenty of clay in the ground where i live and presume that is the cause. Whelp.
Going to try at my Grandparents house, think they have much better soil!
