What a great piece of film but couldn't help noticing every body only had a rod bag & and a fishing basket not like what you see these day were lots of people have tons of gear.

We used to have basket on one shoulder, holdall on other, nets in one hand, bucket of groundbait in the other. Almost always had a long walk on the Witham- I remember having to walk about 150 pegs before our 40 pegs started at Bardney. At 15 to 20 yds between pegs thats about 2 miles walking for the top peg, with no trolleys in those days too. At least the load was lighter on the way back cos the groundbait bucket always got emptied!

Yes a good piece of film - I hope there are more somewhere ! Crofton Blade hit it dead on, long walks, no barrows in those days, no poles or hi-tech lines or gear. Everyone was on a fairly level playing field tackle wise so it was watercraft and talent that ruled the day. Even now I have very fond memories of the train that ran down the Witham (Dr. Beeching should have been hanged), we used to have a day at Bardney and the next week if it didn't fish we would get off somewhere else. I wonder if any of the oldies on here remember 'Basket Bum' (I still have the scars) a result of sitting on a wicker basket for hours on end - no all singing / dancing vastly expensive superboxes in those days !!!!

With a bit of foam in a bag strapped on to the top of the basket. I remember fishing the Trent and forgot my keepnet. Basket emptied and placed in waters edge. Trouble was every time I opened it to put a fish in, another one jumped out!

Iv'e seen that done as well Rich. One day I followed a couple of regulars up to the railway station, they had heard a large shoal of Bream were being caught upstream at Bardney hence one guy had two baskets and holdalls and the other had pinched his Mother's / Wife's pillowcase and was struggling up the road under half a ton of groundbait !!! the fish had a good feed I saw them later without the aforementioned pillowcase. Did you notice in the film everyone wore everyday clothes - no Halkon Hunt in those days. I had some happy days on the 'Sharra's' as well, all squashed in but everyone in good spirits. One day coming home from the Welland a prawn decided to get extra fags from his holdall (under mine),about 5 or 6 miles down the road wheeee bang as we went over a bump my holdall hit three heads (one being his) and then hit the sides of the seats and then the floor !! - It was a long journey home until I could have a look - thanks to the fishy gods and fibreglass my rods survived. Thankfully we now have tubes and padding.

Yes Les, every second sunday on the coach from Chesterfield for me. Down to Middle Level, Welland, Nene, Witham, Trent and Lincs drains. 40 blokes in each club match+ be called a large match these days!
