The FanaticsI know not everyone has Sky, but if you do, then take a look at the new specialist gameshow, The Fanatic, as I was lucky enough to represent angling, against a Sherlock Holmes fan and a Eurovision expert, in Episode 2, tonight on Sky 1. (I live in London these days, hence the clip of me fishing on the Wandle in SW London, but I do still fish up North when I get the chance, when I visit the parents.) My advice to anyone wondering about being on a show is to go for it - apply early, and be yourself!

TV demands fancy shirts I'm afraid. I did suggest wearing my Wychwood 'onesie' but that would have made it a bit hot under the lights. (It was a noble third, out of three). Not sure many people would've identified a monkfish whilst blindfolded!

Not the fairest of game shows. The blindfold round was a joke, Mr Sherlock Holmes got a hook hand to remeber which tv series it was from. You got a flat fish to tell them which species of flat fish it is. The picture board was even worse, I was gutted for you.

Im confused , i dont go Sea Fishing but which species would anyone who,s ever looked at pictures of Seafish get confused about if ever trying to identify an Angler Fish ? I remember first time i saw one on the back of a Fishermans handbook in the early eighties , i thought what a weird ugly strange thing , see it regular on our screens now in wildlife programs & more commonly because we now eat it & call it Monkfish . Its still regarded as ugly mysterious & pretty unique by those that don,t eat it . I dont believe any serious Sea angler would struggle to identify it . That leaves the Coarse Fisherman & the Water Whippers that dont go sea fishing & providing they have never seen any pictures of Sea fish then maybe they might struggle, otherwise the bony head , the teeth the mouth ,the body & the fins might give it away without going for the Absolute clincher of what gives the Angler fish its name , the lure on top of its head it uses to catch prey . You should have maximised your chances mate , if i went on a show id wanna win , i wouldn't win picking Angling as a subject but if i picked Coarse fishing id be confident . I wouldnt wanna face questions on Television about Sea fishing or Water whipping i might say something poor like Thornback Ray , i know what Rays look like though so i wouldnt have picked a ray & looked clueless Might as well have said it was a Crucian Carp lol ?)

Shame he couldn't see it, may've been easier. Im sure theres loads of species of species of Sea fish i couldnt identify if i couldnt see being theres many species the same size & shape in fact the most difficult i might be ok with are Cod & maybe a Macerel but not guaranteed , but the 2 im sure i could identify are Rays & Monkfish . Rays are shaped like other species of Rays so i should be ok & as i said in my original post theres not a whole load of species that out there that could be confused with a Monkfish or am i just daft ? please if you can offer me your wisdom educate me with these species , if not educate ypurself & look at monkfish then search for species it could be confused with it will be easier if disregard species like shoal fish , sharks , jellyfish & Rays & try a find something that looks the same , keep going until you decide you dont need to see a Monkfish to identify it , it would be obvious
