Cheers, Bobj.

I would consider myself a 'specimen angler' but.. I would consider 'the most skilful branch' to be 'match' anglers.
I have known a few and they are always the ones that can turn a non-productive session around and teach you new things at the same time.
As I say, I'm by nature a 'specimen angler' but much of what I know came from some very good match anglers.
Back when I was a youngster, I always remember a guy my own age showing me how to get Bream on the feed with a pole and 'proper' feeding/tackle/whatever methods. Up until then I had no idea that the water had any Bream!
So my vote goes to successful 'match anglers' believe it or not. Be it 200lb of Barbel out of The Severn or 8lb of Roach 'n' skimmers out of the Canal - they have my respect for their ability to make the best out of a no win situation.

After much thought I would agree with 3x2 match angling requires probably the most skill, not that other methods do not require skill not at all,we have a chap comes down to Westwood Northern Carper who is head and shoulders above the other Carpers spent quite a bit of time watching him and his knowledge and water craft are second to none his rigs (he explains them all) are certainly enlighting he regularly does 18/20 Carp a session in the summer, Also know some dam good river anglers whose quarry is far more wild and fewer in numbers than other methods fish for, or the fluff chuckers who have to try and make something that is not food look convincing enough to fool fish into taking it you can cover a lot of ground doing that, its just that with match fishing you and the fish are always under pressure cannot move to another swim if there is not many fish in yours and once a fish is hooked you have to get it out with the confines of your peg without scareing all the other fish away and of coarse when you all put the nets in prior to the match the fish know whats coming, yes my choice would have to be the match lads.

If I had to break down a specific area of Match Fishing - it would have to be the diehard (some would say mad) Canal anglers. Most people (wish I was one !!) given the right conditions can bash out a Ton on a commercial - but to winkle out a winning weight from a half frozen Canal takes some beating. Even Summer fishing can be frustrating, that's why my hair is nearly white !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do mainly river fishing, lake match/pole fishing and some canal fishing but I take my hat off to those who regularly fish and do well on river matches. That's both the wild water and the match pressure rolled into one. Someone like Dave Harrell who is the ultimate river matchman could I think have a go at any branch of angling and make a good fist of it.
