Got away for another weekend on the East Coast this weekend.
Got onto Runswick Bay on the Saturday. Fished from just before low water from the rocks that the tide unveils, just below the sea wall on the north side of the bay. Just chucked one beachcaster out each as it way too slippy to be faffing about with multiple rods.
Had nothing at this mark; couple of bites and knocks but no solid takes. So as the tide started to flow in we moved to the security of the beach and cast out parallel to the rocks into the bay in hope of some flatties.
Had nothing here so we moved onto the big wave breaker rocks. Difficult mark to fish as the rocks are a tad daunting!
My mate had a flounder out here. We fished ‘till 9pm at Runswick, at which time we’d had enough of not catching anything, so we went to buy beer and then back to the tents for a Pot Noodle, and a few bottles of said beer and a bottle of red!
We were blessed with a fantastic sky. We spotted 20+ satellites and about a dozen shooting stars. Great night.
The following day we’d planned to go on a wrecking trip from Whitby, but due to high winds none of the charter boats embarked. Pretty disappointing, but we made the most of it.
Decided on a day on Whitby West. Started off pretty slow, with one small whiting falling to my mate and a scorpion fish to myself. But around 2pm ish, we hit a shoal of Coal Fish at the end of the pier.
I ended up with 5, but only one was big enough to bring back.
While fishing on the pier, you become aware of how many people have no awareness of how dangerous it can be. People chucking lures out without checking behind them, no shock-leaders, kids hanging off the end of the pier.. We ended up moving further down the pier to get away from it all. Luckily we got the pier to ourselves from low water. Which was when we had the run of coalies.
All in all it was a great weekend. And we certainly made the most not going on the boat.
Looking forward to the next one.
Heading up to the Isle of Arran for a week at the back end of the month, so expect some more pics & small write-up! :-)
Cheers,
Joe
